Gamecocks I Clems< By CHARLIE COLLINS Asst. Sports Editor There was jubilation at Carolina Stadium last Saturday, but not from the Carolina dressing room. While dejected, wet-eyed Gamecocks took a long ride to the Roost, estatic Tigers yelled, threw coaches in showers, and sat around enjoying a pleasant victory over big cigars. "This is definitely the best game we've played all year long," said a wet, but happy Hootie Ingram, Clemson head coach. His team had just beaten Carolina for the first time in four years,. and the second year coach had led Clemson to a happy ending to a somewhat dismal season. It didn't start out that way, though. Neither team gained much headway until Clemson roverback Marion Reeves, who went prep school less than 15 miles from USC, intercepted a deflected pass from Carolina's Glenn Morris at the Tiger's 33 yard line. From there running backs Ricky Gilstrap and Wade Hughes moved the ball to a first down at the Gamecock's four-yard line. An aroused Carolina defense then stopped Gilstrap cold four times in succession to take over on downs. Carolina was unable to move the ball out of the hole, however, and after punting the ball, the Tigers scored on an ACC record 52-yard Fra t-Ino give It The Fraternity and Independent football all-stars were announced Sunday by the Intramural department with Barry Strumf picked to coach the Independents and Doug Fisher to head the Frats. Two intercepted Morris passes by Tigers Ben Anderson and Bobby Johnson set up Clemson drives of 34 and 64 yards as Clemson took a 17-0 halftime lead. Then in the second half, Carolina came alive, quickly forcing a Clemson punt then moving in for a 59 yard scoring drive. From there the game settled down into a defensive battle with neither team making any serious threat until Carolina took wholeheartedly to the air in the last two minutes, moving to Clemson's 10 before the Tiger's Dale Henry picked off a sixth Morris pass to end the drive. "It's been a tough road for us," said Ingram, "and it's going to get tougher. We've got Oklahoma coming up next year. "This had really been a bad week for us," the coach said shaking his head. "I didn't know where to start after our loss to N.C. State. Then Wednesday it was sleeting and we couldn't practice outside, and Thursday we had to cut practice short so I could watch the Oklahoma game since we play them next year. We expected rain for the game, it was cloudy this morning, and we had the added burden of worrying about Harris (Dick). "It was a terrible week, but I'll be happy to go through any other just like it for another win like today," said Ingram. "We had planned to throw the ball a lot because we haven't run well all year. We wanted to give Tommy good protection and spread our receivers. We really didn't expect to run that well on Carolina's defense." One of the biggest factors in the game was the six interceptions by the Clemson secondary. "The success of those interceptions," said Ingram, "was our front four's rush. And not only did they give a good rush, but they batted down a lot of passes. "We were afraid to blitz at times, because of Harris," ad mitted the Tiger coach. Harris, however, hurt his ankle in the second quarter, and was unable to play in the last seven minutes of the first half. The All America played the second half, although obviously hampered by ranks ili-stars TMA had four on the Independents and LaBorde also had four, although two were reserves picked by Strumf. Chi Psi had four for the Frats. TMA's Andy Gallin was the only player to win starting spots on offense and defense. Dave Hines, one of the Town Men, and Bates' Billy Rice are joined in the backfield by accurate passer Gene Robinson of Maxcy. Robinson's favorite target during the regular season, Tom Kemp, will be available as will Dave Dilks of the Horseshoe. Olin Gambrell of Bates, Bob Gillespe of Maxcy join Gallin in the interior offensive line while Married Students' Bob Esposito, LaBorde's Steve Gruchacz and Maxcy's Craig Trieber are in the defensive line. Linebackers are Joe Sadono of TMA and Bob Brandt of Maxcy. Maxcy's Steve Zagoria and LaBorde's Bill Sherlock are the deep backs. Chi Psi's Doug Norton is the Fraternity quarterback with teammate Charlie Moss, and Sigma Nu's Lytle Pressley also in the backfield. The ends are Brian Fowler of Phi Kappa Sigma and John Hedlund of Pi Kappa Alpha, the only Frat player to start both ways. Hedlund will play safety on defense. Ritt Titter of Sigma Nu, Gordie Cherry of Sigma Nu and Roscoe Hayes of PiKa are the offensive lineman. Joe Hills of Sigma Nu,b Mike Perkins of PiKa, Tom Shaw of Alpha Tau Omega and Tim McGuire of Chi Psi are the interior defensive men.
