It was the final meet of the year for Coach John West's harriers. By splitting the meet the Gamecocks ended the season with a 5-5 record. In addition to Georgia State, Carolina has wins over Brevard Junior College, Clemson, Baptist and Georgia this season. Wayne Thomas was the top finisher for Carolina Monday. He was third overall, behind a duo of Georgia Tech runners who tied for first. Thomas was timed in 29:00, as compared with the 28:25 recorded by the meet winners. Jack Miller and Larry Schemelia were the next Carolina runners to finish. They both recorded 29:58 times for sixth and seventh place. Eye in the eyhole By Doug Williams Sports Editor As I have previously stated, it Is now the time that in terest in college football switches from the local stadiums to the national bowl games. And as I have also stated, bow I officials often get dollar signs and playing ability confused when it comes to their ultimate selections. For two of the major bowls, the Rose and Cotton, foolish rules dictate the participants. The Rose Bowl pits the Pacific Eight Conference winner versus the Big Ten champion, while the Cotton Bowl has the Southwest Conference leader against a major independent. This year, it appears that Stanford and Michigan will meet in the Rose Bowl. Michigan is without a doubt a worthy participant, but Stanford? The Indians have dropped three games, one of which was to that perennial West coast power, San Jose State. This year's Cotton Bowl looms as a Texas-Penn State battle. The Longhorns are not having the year tht many expected of them. They have been defeated quite soundly, by Arkansas and Oklahoma, two of the nation's premier teams. Penn State is unbeaten and has a good claim to the national title. But a win over Texas would not enhance that claim too awfully much. And though it is a step down, and a considerable one, let me examine the Peach Bowl. Officials of the Atlanta based 'classic' stated that - South Carolina was a definite possibility against North Carolina. Executive Director George Crumbley told me that even if he couldn't get both teams, neither was out of consideration. But North Carolina accepted a Gator Bowl bid. So who does the money minded Peach Bowl turn to? One of the year's major failures, Georgia Tech, a team that was ranked In the Top Ten early in the year, who lost to USC in their opening game. Why? Keep in mind that Georgia Tech is located in Atlanta, as is the Peach Bowl. And that a game with Georgia Tech against anyone will bring in all kinds of profit. The fact that the Yellow Jackets will probably get blown off the field by Mississippi does not mean a thing to Peach Bowl officials. Granted, the Orange Bowl could still be as small time as the Peach Bowl by inviting the University of Miami to play Tampa every year. It would make all kinds of money off of local interest, and still wallow in mediocrity. The Cotton Bowl could pit Baylor against Texas at El Paso and rake in all kinds of money; the Rose Bowl could place Pacific against San Diego State; the Sugar Bowl, Tulane versus Loyola of New Orleans. All would be financial successes, without a doubt. Perhaps the day will come when there are enough bowl games that bowl officials will have to go with top flight competition and disregard financial success. A good game with two good teams will invariably be a big money game. But until that day comes, while Mr. Crumbley and his associates are greedily counting their money, laughing at the sports world, we must put up with this capitalistic state of affairs.Then,, when other bowls have built themselves up to national prominence by slating good games, we can all laugh at the Peach Bowl, when two teams with 2-9 records fight it out before 137 fans.
