'Am celet The fail of 171 marks the 50th Anniversary of the University Bands. The Carolina Band was first organized by students in the early fal of 1921 with only seven members present. Since the initial organization 50 years ago, the bands have grown to their present strength of 250 bandsmen and staff. From 1921 the bands have been expanded to include the Carolina Marching Band, Carolina Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Sym phonic Band, Irish Reds Pep Band, the Jazz Ensembles - Silver Spurs, Golden Spurs and Red Spurs, plus the Rock Ensemble and ex perimental Lab Band. The University Bands offer Carolina students an opportunity in a versatile and comprehensive band program. This year the bands travelled to Duke University, Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of Tennessee. In addition and by special request of the New Orleans Department of Recreation, the Carolina Band performed in historic Jackson Square Oct. 24. Other tours by the concert units are planned as well as local con certs. The University Bands sponsored a lecture on "The Role of Band Music in America," by Dr. Harold Bachman Nov. 13. The entire Stan Kenton Band will be artist in residence at the University Band Hall on March 17 and 18, 1972 with a grand finale concert in Carolina Coliseum, at 8 p.m., March 18.
