Student Senate uses fees to make farces MR. FARRELL: Congratulations to Julianne Still and the Student Senate on yet another one of their cute little wonders of democracy. Despite the fact that their every move is a farce, they do provide us with some of the best entertainment supplied on this campus by our own fees. Too bad their hilarious antics aren't free like Eddie Fennell's. RICHARD B. CARTER Bates President has built political machine MR. FARRELL: Carolina has found an answer to Mayor Daley of Chicago. His name is Pete Feheley and he rules over in the mighty kingdom of Bates House. Mr. Feheley has built a political machine at Bates House based on conceit and a snobbish attitude. And Mr. Feheley's per sonal attitude has spilled over to include most of the residents of Bates House. The typical Bates House resident has shown himself lo be arrogant, snobbish, and always with the attitude that he is TH HEIKEN] THEA1 On Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. thi Series Committee present: campus Room, Capstone. (Possibly because Bates residents pay i little more in housing fees, anc their dorm has a few added con veniences.) Having lived in Bates House ii1 its initial year and observed its progress since, I will admit that it has come a long way in a short time. And since Pete Feheley became President of Bates lasl spring it has come even further, but only in those areas that Mr. Feheley wished to develop. In a sense, Bates House has never really become a part of the Carolina community. It has remained aloof from the rest of the campus and has functioned as though it were a separate in stitution. Which is probably just the way that Pete Feheley and the Bates men want it. Their own place in the sun. Quite humorous. Dealings with the Bates House begin with Mr. Feheley and if you want to get anywhere with him, you better be the right color, come from the right background, and think the same way that he does. The cold shoulder that he gave student body president Harry Walker on the night of the "S.G.A. rap session" was a shining example of both his racial preferences and his disdain for any organization other than Bates House. While Bates House throws wild beer parties for its men, community relations and security relations and efforts around the dorm fail. But then, the black IE UNIVERS 444, P~UPPET ['RE e University Union Artist a the Heiken Puppet in the I. I). to the youths in the neighborhood cannot vote for him, so why expect Mr. Feheley to be concerned with them? Mr. Feheley never operates I without a motive, regardless of how innocent his intentions may appear. For this Bates House stands to profit, but other students lose out. To summarize some steps must be taken to bring Bates House within the sphere of University life. From the Bates President, to the hall advisors, to the Bates residents, all need to reevaluate their role at the University and to stop acting like the ultimate upper class of the Carolina campus. They are no better than any other Carolina student, no matter what Pete Feheley tells them. FOR A GREATER CAROLINA, BARRY MASTERS Student apathy helped destroy Student Mobe MR. FARRELL: The Student Mobilization does not exist on campus. Anyone could reactivate the charter but the officers and persons who attended the last meeting agreed that the medium of SMC was no longer useful. Often we have made mistakes in our program and more often the students of USC have demonstrated their faith and apathy toward the capitalistic, repressive society we live in. Three hundred people a day are murdered by our bombs at Nixon's whim. American militarism and corporate politics has condemned the great majority of ~the human race to poverty and colonialism. Fear of taking risks and committing themselves to struggle and true education had implicated the student body of USC. We wish to reaffirm the possibility and necessity of this revolutionary struggle. It is possible for all of us to work at all different levels to rectify the evils. Electorial politics, community organizing, and civil disobediance can all be valuable if they lead to action. The time to act is now and always - get off your ass - get off your ass and DO IT. PETER BROWN PHIL SHARPE Student Senate controls activity fees MR. FARRELL: The students who voted in the referendum concerning an activity fee for summer school no longer have to worry about this matter. Student Senate has decided this issue for you. No longer will students . be bothered by referendums when activity fee increases are proposed. Summer school students will pay the $3.50 activity fee because the Student PRESENTS. If President Walker signs the bill you will have lost a most important right-that of deciding whether activity fees will be increased. In the future, the determination of what your activity fee is will be made by the Student Senate. The Finance Committee will first do some research to determine the financial needs of the various campus organizations and then make a report to the Senate. "Upon receipt of this report, the Student Senate shall fix an in crease, decrease, or a constant level for the Student Activity Fee." Ihe Student Senate is willing to have your advice in this matter, but it could care less about your consent. If this concerns you, perhaps you had better take some action. Who is your senator? How did he vote? What about the cand'dates; have you asked their opi'i-on in this matter, or what, if elected, they intend to do about it? Why not contact President Walker and let him know how you feel; urge him to veto these bills if you wish to preserve your rights in this matter. It's your money, and it's my money. I believe we should keep our right to determine when activity fee increases are made. TONY DANIELS, SENATOR, DISTRICT 7 TOWERS U U kfING?
