Casey Manning, 6-2 junior guard
from Dillon, S.C., will miss the
Gamecocks' preseason basketball
work and Is expected to be out of
uniform for the season's opener
against Auburn Dec. 1, following
an operation for a hernia Tuesday
at Columbia Hospital.
Manning is resting comfortably
at the hospital although he "is
feeling some pain." However,
Manning said, "I feel 100 per cent
better today than I did yesterday."
The hernia was discovered
almost 'ay accident. The
Gamecocks underwent routine
physical examinations before the'
beginning of practice Oct. 5 and it
was discovered the Manning had a
slight hernia. "Luckily, I had the
operation," Manning said,
"because they (the doctors) found
that the hernia was worse than
they thought."
The usual recovery period for
the operation is six, eight or 10
weeks. Manning said that he would
not have to go through a special
program but that he "would have
to take it easy." Manning said, "It
is easy to reinjure yourself. I'll
have to take it easy and not get in a
hurry. I'll have to take care of
myself." -
The injury will not keep Manning
off the floor too long. "I'll
definitely be ready to play," he,

said. "I'm looking forward *to
playing in a lot of basketball this
season."
Manning was used mostly as a
defensive specialist last season,
usually playing the opposing
team's top scorer while he was in
the game. He was always one-on
one against former USC All
America John Roche in practice,
helping his defensive play.
However, Manning can score, as
evidenced by his 16.3 scoring
average as a freshman and his 33
plus scoring mark over his high
school career, that ended with his
being named Prep Player of the
Year. He scored over 50 points in a
single game several times during
his high school career.
"He has been a big help to us
defensively because of his quick
hands," USC head coach Frank
McGuire siad. "But he can score
also. We all hope for a speedy
recovery."
