Leaders hide while students shout in streets MR. FARRELL: The possible capture of Rap Brown has prompted me to sit down and write some observations concerning the youth cult leaders and social leaders of the day. I have very little to say in favor of any personage mentioned with one exception. Looking back over several years of student unrest and general attempts to disrupt the system, I have found quite an interesting pattern. Failure seems to be the final end to the majority of "youth leaders" and "social movers." Let me begin by citing examples. (1) Angela Davis avows herself to be a communist, is dismissed from a university, accused of aiding a courtroom murder and attempt to escape, she then runs away and hides. When she is caught, her hair is shorn and all of her shouting has not been heard. (3) Abbie Hoffman leads and helps implement Chicago riots and then states plainly his hopes for revolution- in America. His achievements - (a) one of the first leaders to state a plan of action (b) becomes disenchanted with the success of his plan and cuts his hair (c) he renounces much of his following. (4) Stokely Carmichael - Black activist who became to some Blacks what George Rockwell was to the American Nazi Party. His achievements - married into wealth and fades into passivity while Miss Makeeba sings. (5) Bernadette Dorhn - a student activist in the Weathermen who liked to play with matches. Her achievements - (a) wanted for questioning (b) fugitive (c) has not taught her students how to make a bomb properly. (6) Jimi Hendrix - excellent guitarist with a large following who offered a new dimension in music. Her achievements (a) several records that were hits (b) self-imposed death by drugs. (8) "Rap" Brown who mouthed many hates and became a self-fashioned radical leader among some Blacks . His achievements - (a) some following (b) accused of being involved in a crime (c) a fugitive (d) he ran away when confronted by the law (e) a thief (if the man captured is "Rap") (f) and if so, he is shot (g) and a prisoner. This list could go on and on and on and on. Take a good look at the list and see what the whole'bunch have accomplished. The answer is ,evident. Four fugitives, Two dead, Two quit. Let me make my point clear. If the youth of America are going to look to leaders such as these, then we can expect our success to be less than theirs. Even less than being shot while we cower on the ground after trying to hold-up someone. There is an alternative. There is an example set by a man who has given everything to achieve - he did succeed. This man did not run and hide when he was accused of a crime. Rather, he turned himself in and faced the charges. He spent nights in jail when he could have been hiding out of jail. He stirred up people everywhere he went. He was loved, hated, arrested, set free. He had a goal and he ac cepted nothing less. His achievements (a') born Black (b) preached God's love and His peace (c) walked in the streets for human rights (d) led sit-in demonstrations for human rights (e) eloquent speaker (f) he could dream (g) he faced the law (h) won the Nobel Prize (i) caused more human rights legislation to be enacted than the entire Congresses of 90 years had done (j) he led his people in the face of dissent (k) he did not quit (1) he did not destroy himself or others (m) he built-up (n) he was a man (o) he was Martin Luther King. Dr. King set his goal high. Even now, his efforts con tinue to achieve. Young and Old America, WAKE UP! We can not continue to support the weirdos who have given up on themselves because the going "just got too rough." "Rap", if you are not the one captured, you had better keep running and hiding. It's just your style. It's hard to correct an unjust situation. You might have to go to jail, and I know that would be asking too much. King is dead, but his alternative is alive and is our only reasonable alternative. JAMES V. PARKER. JR. Why do ex-cons get more money than veterans? MR. FARRELL: I would like some answers to the! following questions. (1) Are people under State Aid drawing more than $175.00 a month for other than total physical disability? (2) Is it fact that a man who is going to Clemson University freshly out of jail is drawing over $350.00 per month with tuition paid over and above the compensation? Would it not be economically advantageous for a young man to pursue and commit a major crime and be imprisoned with the knowledge that when he gets out of that "terrible situation" that he has so "misguidedly" wandered into, he will receive almost twice the compensation on for education than the young man who has served a comparable time in honorable service for the nation in the U. S. Armed Forces. I would like some answers because I feel and a number of my fellow veterans feel cheated because we have lived lives suitable to the mores and laws of our land. We cannot see how anyone would let such impropriety pass legislative investigation. Where does American Govern ment place its confidence? I wish not to believe that criminals are bribed to live a law abiding existence and that service to your country is less important than thievery from fellow human beings. EDWIN H. FORD, JR. I once too expressed myself in the same fashion you do now, and would have labeled myself not a "liberal" but a "conservative." I would explain to you the process of "radicalization" theoretically and in a relevant context as they apply to my experience (which is relatively small); however, un fortunately, to do this requires that I write a book, which by itself, and certainly no condensation into a long letter (an impossible task) will not bring you around. Keep your views. If you are really sincere you will change them in time. And just like many smiled at me when I went to my first peace march because they understood a new consciousness was being born in me (still is), I may get a chance to someday smile at you, and we both will know why.
