After all, it was the second straight time that the GCSS had correctly chosen Carolina, and although his predicted score was wrong, the point spread was right. On the off season, perhaps a bookie? Meanwhile, the resident risktaker's outside agitators once again found themselves tearing their hair out at the prognosticator's good luck. The hate mail has reached an all time low and with that in mind, the fantastic fortune teller gazes into his crystal ball. Last week, 44-15, .750; for the season, 132-28-3, .753. That includes last week's surprise prediction of Oklahoma over Southern California, as well as the wrong selections of Air Force over Penn State and Duke's upset of Stanford. Virginia invades Carolina Stadium fresh off a big win over previously undefeated Vanderbilt, while Carolina looks for win number four. U. Va. returns both Gary Helman and Jim Lacey, their top two runners last season, while receiver Bill Davis leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in receptions. But USC is coming off a well deserved win over tough Memphis State. The Gamecocks used an excellent defense to throttle the Tigers. This weekend should be different in only one respect: Virginia suffers the wrath of the ON ALL I STOP BY Al A e' Soot Carolina defense. USC 24, Virginia 6. Michigan State and Michigan clash in a battle of Big Ten titans. The Wolverines have been rolling over their opponents with monotonous regularity. But State made Notre Dame fight for their win last weekend. But Michigan is not Notre Dame. And the score will show the difference. Michigan 21, Michigan State 3. Air Force comes off a heart breaking 16-14 loss to Penn State, but Southern Methodist is fresh off a big win. Both teams are air oriented, but the Falcons have a definite ground threat in Brian Bream. Air Force 31, SMU 14. Army pulled its second straight upset of the -season last week, defeating Missouri after upsetting Georgia Tech the previous Saturday. But Penn State is a much better football team than Army. Much, much better. Penn State 52, Army 20. In a big Southern game, Ten nessee meets unpredictable Georgia Tech. The Vols have a good ground game, a good air game and a good defense. All Tech has is inconsistency. And that just isn't good enough. Tennessee 35-, Georgia Tech 9. Florida's vaunted air game gave Tennessee a test last week, before the Gators finally fell. To top this, Stanford was upset by a Steve Jones-less Duke team last week. The Heisman Trophy might be up in the air. Washington 34, Stanford 28. Perhaps the biggest game of the weekend will pit Texas against Oklahoma. Following Oklahoma's victory over Southern Cal and Texas' romp over Oregon, the Sooners might be up; Texas might be up; then again, they both might be down. In any event, it will be one fine football game. Texas 20, Oklahoma 17. Duke has got to be higher than a kite after their big win over Stanford on the coast. So this would be the prime time for an upset of the Blue Devils.. .right? Wrong. Look at the competition: Clemson. Duke 24, Clemson 10. Joe Paterno, the fine head coach at Penn State, can be credited with helping Bill decide to come to Carolina. "I called Coach Paterno when I was thinking of transferring," he said. I sort of wanted to play up north. He told me that he would be glad to give me a scholarship but that I would only have one year of eligibility because they are on the four year plan." "Then he recommended several schools. The Big 8 and Southwest Conferences were mentioned," Bill said. "Florida and Florida State were also brought up." 'Then he mentioned South Carolina. Pac Sc 3. !f team Troup USC a possibility, ' he explained. "I looked into UWiC and decided to come here," he commented. Several things about Carolina have especially impressed Bill. "The student support for the team is terrific," he remarked. The attitude of the team also pleases Troup. "The players have a great attitude. They want to win badly and they make a lot of sacrifices to win. I'm not saying that the players at Virginia \idn't have a good attitude, because they did, but the attitude here is great too," he commented. At Virginia last year Troup completed 93 passes in 184 at tempts. The 93 completions totalled 1289 yards and included 10 touchdown aerials. He compiled these impressive statistics despite the fact that he did not take over the quarterback duties until the fifth game. The statistics do make it apparent that Troup is one very talented passer. Some people may figure that the year of inactivity may hurt Bill's effectiveness. The Pennsylvania native does not agree with that theory. "I don't think sitting out #is year will hurt me." he commented. "In fact it may help. I have a whole year to learn the offense," he pointed out. This is a year of getting acquainted with the Gamecock offense. Next year Troup will -put into practice what he learned.
