Rugby club s4 to open seaso By STEVE PARKER Sports Writer The Rugby season opens for the Gamecocks Sundp against the visiting Davidson team. The game will stari on intramural field "B". Since 1962 the Atlantic Coast Conference has awz Carmichael Cup annually to the conference collegf strating the best "all-around athletic excellence." Mar received the coveted award six of the nine times it awarded, demonstrating that major sports alone don't athletic program. Clearly, fan interest in football and basketball has caused several fine sports, such as the action sport of rugby, to be ignored. In a sport which many claim to be faster and rougher paced than football, Carolina's squad has proved to be most proficient; however, it has gone unheralded. Returning to open the season against Davidson are several veterans from last year's club which compiled a 7 1 record. The lone loss last year came at the hands of a tough Florida State squad. Ironically enough FSU's lone loss was inflicted by Carolina in a return match. Manning the scrummage, or what corresponds to lineman in football, for this year's version of tke Rugby team will be: George Geiser, Dave Ansley, Freddy Holland, Werner Minshall, Gerral Nichoalson, Lee Boyle, Nick Canizares, Jerry Sanders, and Andy Gallin. Playing in the back slots will be: Jimmy Wynn, Frank Walton, Burke Hayes, Paul Salvatore, Jack Clasen, Bob Whitaker, Jerry McMahon, and Larry Healy. Wynn is the most experienced member on the squad and, while there is really no coach, does most of the in structional work with the team. What is technically the "Rugby Club'", consists of some 35 spirited players. At each match two games occur: a match between the two starting teams and a game bet ween the "B"' players of each school. Therefore, a strong showing in the '"B" contest could easily propel a player into the starting game of the following week. The rugby club will participate in eight scheduled contests, along with the second annual USC Invitational Tournament (a two day battle with three other schools on Nov. 13 and 14.) The tournament, although the opposing teams are yet to be officially determined, could feature the squad's only match with the tough team of FSU. According to Geiser the Davidson team should not present a major threat to Carolina. "We played them two (See RUGGE RS, Page 12) After 40 Years At T he Same Location . ..
