Recycling is changing solid waste into reusable products, Holtzclaw said. ''Newspapers, magazines, boxes, IBM cards and other paper items can be shredded and then used to make new paper products. For every ton of paper recycled, 17 trees are saved," he said. "Glass products are melted down, according to color, and then used to produce new glass products,"' he said. "'This whole process consumes less energy than creating bottles from scratch. Thus recycling pollutes less and uses less fossil fuel to create the necessary energy. "'The aluminum and scrap metal are also melted and used to create new products," Holtzclaw said. "'There is a finite supply of minerals and without reclamation of metals, we will someday consume all our precious metals," he added.
