State drops I Micha By CHARLIE COLLINS Asst. Sports Editor Al Michaels, N.C. State head football coach wasted few words in describing the Wolfpack's 35-7 loss last week to M4ryland. "We just got licked, and licked badly," said the new coach. Michaels, who succeeded Earl Edwards as head coach only last July, was less than enthusiastic in describing his team's rout. "I'm not at all happy about the game. We have some good sophomore running backs, but they didn't have any place to run Satur day. We didn't gain much passing either. "I'm not sure just how good Maryland is," said the former defensive coach, "but they looked good against us." A loss like that might make a team appear unlikely to be one of the toughest of opponents, but Carolina defensive coach Bill Rowe refuses to take the Wolfpack lightly. "State just got behind early in the Maryland game," said Rowe. "When that happened, they had to do things they didn't want to do." State gained only 12 yards rushing against the Terps, but Rowe asserted that the Pack "has a good running game. "They have three sophomore starters in the backfield," said Rowe, "and all of them are real fast. (Charley) Young is their fullback, and runs a 4.5 forty. (Willy) Burden is the other back runs a 4.6 forty, and (Mike) Stultz plays wingback. I'd classify them as super sophs. "State has a veteran line to Lirow D efense By BILL GRANT Sports Writer While Cairolina's offense was having its problems Saturday. the defense turned in another creditable preformance. Although five touchdowns have been scored against USC. the defense has only been charged with two: the others being punt return and two in terception returns. Spearheading this defensive unit Is strong-side linebacker Rick Brown, who is currently one of the leaders in tackles. The key to the success of the deferisive team so far has, according to Brown, been "hustle, quickness, desire and enthusiasm. The defense has a great deal of pride in itself." But the loss to Duke was last week, and head coach Paul D)ietzel's attention now turns to Saturday's opponent, North Carolina State. State's record is 0 2. losing to Kent State 23-21 and Maryland 35-7. 'However," warns the 6-4, 210 pound native of Rock Hill, "don't underestimate State. They have a couple of good, hard-running backs that will run right at us. They've beaten themselves with fumbles and also their quarterback is coming back after missing the first two games because of injuries. It will be a tough game." According to Brown, one thing in USC's favor will be the return to Carolina Stadium. "Football is a great deal mental," he said. "The fans. new stadium, the Astroturf all help to get us up for the game." 9~01 going ''This is a very impressive team in running the football," said Rowe as he summed up the Gamecock's next opponent.
