Jones teams with Jackson to stop USC (Continued from page 6) pounded on the talents of Jones, who, in addition to running hard, punted nine times for a 41-yard average. "Jones is no fluke. We'd have him stopped on the ground, but he'd keep right on going. He's also a fine kicker. He hangs the ball up really well, and believe me, that hurts." Then he simply added, "And Ernie Jackson is one heck of a football player. Two of those touchdowns belonged to him alone. "The things we did well pgainst Georgia fech didn't go today. The kickoff and punt return game was sorry. But Duke covered them all very well. "No one did a good enough job to win," Dietzel continued. "We just couldn't come up with the big defensive play. I wasn't satisfied or pleased with anything. Now we'll find out what kind of people we have on this team." The quarterback situation again appeared to be confused, but Dietzel denied this. "The quarterback position is not wide open. No passer really stuck out like a sore thumb. Our passing game was nil. "We had made up our mind to redshirt Robbie Davis. Remember, Glenn Morris hasn't played football for three years." Then Dietzel paused. "I guess maybe we were spoiled with Tommy. Suggs. The ball was always on target. Unless the receiver dropped it, it was a completion. "Duke is a gutsy team," he concluded. "They are a good football team, and they keep coming at.you. We didn't even go out on the field right. It makes you feel really stupid with a game like this." Yes, it was just one of those days. USC defense dr praise from Mc (Continued from page 6) Harris. '"I liked the passing game, we dropped a couple-passes we should have held onto, but It was impressive." He continued, "We had some sparkle on defense. That's what you always want, a little life defensively." - The scout squad's one-point conquest of the fresh men occurred in a scrimmage game held at the Roost practice fields last Friday afternoon. It was probably the last major test for the Biddies before their Sept. 30 season-opening clash againlt The Citadel frosh. The redshirt team scored first on a long pass to tight end Billy Carpenter. A successful conversion kick handed them a 7-0 advantage. The game's only other score, this one by the frosh team, occurred in the second half of the game. Quarterback Dobby Grossman fired a strike to running back Tom Middlebrooks who danced into the end zone to complete the 49-yard scoring play. Gambling on the '"'all or nothing" play, the frosh QB bootlegged the ball on the conversion attempt. His gamble falled, however, as he was swarmed under by the redshirt defense short of the end zone. More offensive action than indicated by the low 7-6 score occurred. The game consisted of two 30-minute periods in which the clock was continually running, and so the scrimmage session lasted far less than would a regular contest. The freshman squad, although they held the short end of the score at game's conclusion, turned .in an impressive performance, including some very strong individual showings. End C. A. Wilson gathered in seven passes during the afternoon and was a sub stantial key to the strong freshman aerial attack. Powers complimented the play of the elusive 5-9, 155, receiver, "I was real impressed by C. A. Wilson, as anyone who saw the practice today would be."' Also highlighted in the scrimmage showcase was tailback Tom Zipperly, who impressed viewers with. several fine runs which relaxed pressure from the Biddle passing game. Sport Talk (Continued from Page 6) provement from last season. And Dickie Harris is one of the best kick returners in the nation. But Carolina can't rely on Harris to run one back every game. That's asking the impossible. The strong point his year seems to be defense, although the potential is there for putting points on the board. The Gamicocks have a chance for a good season. A USC team has never won over seven games and this year's edition, with some offense, could get close to that mark. But to do that, USC will have to find a way to cover the weaknesses. Because they are there and they stand out like .a sore thumb. "We have to pick up the pieces and start over," Dietzel said. "We will rebound, I'm sure, this team is too good to quit."
