Harris vaul Dick Harris, Gamecock return artist, leaps Georgia Tech defender in one of his seven returns last Saturday night. Harris, Carolina C Jones lead By DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Editor USC and Duke, both fresh off of minor upsets last week, clash Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham at 1:30 p.m. The Blue Devils, who stunned Florida 12.6, effectively stopped the Gators' heralded passing combination of John Reaves and Carlos Alverez, while Carolina halted some fine running backs en route to a 24-7 victory over highly rated Georgia Tech. Duke's win was largely the work of lunior running back Steve Jones, who put on pretty much of a one man show, rushing for 207 yards in 40 carries. The Blue Devils have to rely primarily on strong runners, since the record setting Leo Hart and Wes Chesson have since departed via graduation. As any good runner will say, he is only as good as the line in front of him. The win over Florida was no exception. it was a big, strong group of linemen that paved the way for Jones' heroics, allowing quarterback Dennis Satyshur to throw only when it was absolutely necessary. The offensive line is anchored by lunior guard Ed Newman. A former mIddle linebacker, Newman was switched to guard only ten days prior to the opener , and drew praise from head coach Mike McGee. ''Ed did an exceptional lob of blockIng during the entire game," McGee said. "Considering he had less than two weeks at guard, he played a near perfect game." But it was not the work of Newman alone that opened holes for the Blue Devil rushers. Tackle Willie Clayton, a huge 6-3, 256 pound lunior also played a fine game. Other line standouts were center Dale Grimes, 6-1, 200, Tom Cain, 6-3, 220, John Dull, 6-2, 210 and tight end Bill Baker, 6-1, 195. Jones leads a talented trio of tough runners that virtually control the Duke offensive attack. The 6-0, 220 junior rushed for 654 yards In 203 carries last year, and appears to be pickI ig up ts defender holder of four NCAA season records, ad-led 176 return yards to his total in the game. hallen ges, Is Devils Bill Thompson and Bob ZwIrko complement Jones al the other running back slot. Thompson was Duke's second leading rusher last year, gaining 457 yards In 99 tries, while Zwirko picked up 40 yards in seven carries against Florida. With Hart and Chesson gone, the Devil air game is bound to suffer. Quarterback Satyshur threw only seven times against Florida, completing three for 39 yards. Baker, who was behind Chesson last year in receptions with 27, seems regulated to a blocker in Duke's new attack. Jones is also a good receiver, as are Brad Evans and Dan Phelan. The defense played a malor role in the Blue Devil win. Though only one starter returns from last year, Florida's runners gained only 100 yards in the entire game. Duke had 158 In the first haif. Bruce Mills, 6-2, 220, leads the inexperienced Duke line at tackle. John Ricca, a 6-6, 220 pound sophomore, played well against the Gators and also recovered one of three Florida fumbles. Though the line was important, the linebackers and secondary should be given most of the credit on the defense. Bob Fitch, who was switched to linebacker from right tackle, covered his area well to take the quIck pass over the middle away from the Gators. Fleet Ernie Jackson and the very capable Rich Searl spearhead the secondary. Last season, Searn intercepted seven passes, while Mike Davies, cornerback, nailed three. it was through their efforts that Reeves was con tinually unable to go to his deep threat Alverez. If defense was important to Duke, It was the prime ingredlant In Carolina's victory over Georgia Tech. Rick Brown, who had seven tackles, and John LeMeup, who had six, will .once agaIn try to stop a capable running game. Glenn Morris will be at the helm of the of fense, as the Gamecocks will undoubtedly put their wealth of, runng~ action.to test the, inexperience o( Daue' isl- 1:A,., Defensive spearheac By CHARLIE COLLINS Assi. Sports Ed. - Defense is the name of the game in football, but it takes a battle such as the one between Carolina and Georgia Tech to prove it t6 the fans. Defensive coach Bill Rowe, however, knew it all along. Everyone knows it was a defensive battle last Saturday night, and everyone knows that the Gamecocks looked better on defense than any Carolina team has in quite a while. Rowe ex plained why after the "big win" hysteria had worn off and Duke began to be the word around the Roost. "Attitude is the main thing. That's something you can't coach. These guys just took it on their own to have a great defensive year this season. "We gave all the players a weight to report back in at and most of them lost more than they had to. (Doby. ) Gillis lost 30 pounds, (Ken) Wheat lost 35, (Pat) Kahout lodt 20, and (Greg) Crabb lost 10. Others lost weight too, but these were the main ones. This really helped us on our quickness. "Last year," said Rowe, "we thought we were too big." Five starters of the 1970 defense have left the Gamecocks, but with a new attitude and some tough sophomores and redshirts, Rowe has reason to be expectant. "We had more enthusiasm in the Geoigia Tech game, and more people getting to the football than we've ever had. I just hope we can keep it up week after week." Asked about strong points on the Carolina defense, Rowe gave the expected answer ii reference to the backfield of Dickie Harris, Tyler Hellams, Bo Davies, and Jimmy Nash. "Our defensive =1oo the strongest point, St"v Jones: Duke Power but they 1llntyleas strong as the forward wall. "We were pleased with the performance of the forcing uit USC soccei enters fall The Carolina soccer team has kicked off the fall 1971 season. Although unofficial practice sessions were held last week, the 40 or more potential players got down to work in earnest Monday af ternoon. The status of the Soccer Club this fall is in potentially much better shape than a any time in its history. However, things are still unsettled. Budgetary requests for the club have not yet been approved and will not be decided until this af ternoon. The Soccer Club had requested $1,000 to purchase uiforms, pay officials for the games. --.., .4 squad Is team against Georgia Tech. Kahout and Hellams did a good Job of rushing the center on PlUnts. They forced those two high snaps that went for safeties, and also a low one allowing Harris to block it. "The second unit also did a fine job, " Rowe said happily. They played over thirty plays and didn't allow any scoring. We need that depth." The forcing unit should receive more of a test of their abilities in the upcoming Duke game. "I really don't know how good we are defensively," said Rowe," because in -the Tech game we had great field position most of the night due to Robbie Reynolds' punting. You can do a lot when you have the opposition backed up like that. "When Tech did have good field position, though, we held them well. "Duke will be tough," mused Rowe, as he thought about the ipcoming weekend. "They have a power football team. Steve Jones had 207 yards against Florida for them last week." "And he's just one of many," added assistant coach Pride Ratterree. They also have Art Bosetti, the third team back that beat us on the running game last year, and Bob Zwirko, and Bill Thompson. Duke has as good running backs as we'll face, and a veteran line to go with It." "Duke didn't have to throw nuch against Florida because they controlled the game," said Rowe. "We know Dennis Satyshur can throw, though, because of the spring he had." Greg Crabb, winner of this weeks Golden Spur award for his performance in the Tech game, expects the defensive ends to get their workouts against Duke. The award goes to the member of the forcing unit who has the most big plays and good hits in each game. Linebacker Crabb was followed closely by tackle John Lelleup in the coaches' choice for the Tech game. "I had the best opportunity for it this week, because Tech's bread and butter play was crossing back in right where I was. Everybody had a good game, and It's hard to pick one man as the best. "Thbe award probably will go to a defensive end in the Duke pine since they rin the option so much," predicted the senior linebacker. squad reason This year's first match will be against perenial cross-town rival Columbia Bibie College, which always manageis to field a potent team with many foreign students who are experienced in the game.
