Strong Te invades C By DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Editor Georgia Tech brings a deep, talented team to Carolina Stadium tomorrow evening, as USC faces the Yellow Jackets at 7:30, in the season's opener for both teams. Young leads Gam ecocks into season By CHARLIE COLLINS Asst. Sports Editor Jackie Young no longer sits in back of Tommy Suggs. His place is at the top of the Gamecock command, true to last season's predictions. Young, who proved his talent in crucial situations last year, now finds himself starting his first varsity game for Carolina. "I'm a little more nervous than usual," admitted the junior quarterback. Last year I was nervous for the team, and a little for myself, but this year I'm the one that has to either get something started or not. This is the first time I won't be on the bench in the beginning of the game. "Oigood thing we have to rely on are the other three quarterbacks Glen Morris, Tommy Rhodes, and Robbie Davis. If something happens to me, any one of them can fill in just as well or better. I'm really lucky to be starting with those guys around. "It's so different from being a back-up," Young then added. "I just hope I don't choke." An unspectacular spring found Young at third string quarterback. in May. A little publicised injury however, bothered him throughout the summer phase of football. "I was playing nervous in the spring with that injury, but now that's cleared up. "I think the whole team has a great attitude this year. We're not all thinking about ourselves; we're thinking of the team as a whole. Everybody's pulling together real well." Young will have a much smaller line protecting him than last season's, and one that sports new faces. "The whole team is smaller this year, but quicker. Everyone has lost weight. and we're in good shape. Our offensive line is smaller, quicker, and real concientious about what they're doing. They lack experience, but I don't think that will hurt us." "You won't find a better group of receivers than we have," said Young. All these guys 'Jimmy Mitchell, Jackie Brown, Billy Freeman, are starting are great. All you have to do is get the ball near them and they'll catch it. Any of them could start with any other t.eam." With talented receivers, Young _______ is confident of his passing game, but is still aware that his running game must play a big part of any success Carolina will have against the Rambling Wrecks. "We need to establish a run ning game early." Chuck Mimms and Billy Ray Rice will start in the backfield, backed up by Tommy Simmons and Mark DeCamilla. As senior linebacker Greg Crabb ( put it, this is the "deciding game of the season". Tech holds a 7-2 margin in the series that began in 1901, when the Jackets shut USC out, 13-0. The most important factor the Gamecocks must contend with Is Georgia Tech's depth. Returning are 22 offensive team lettermen, incuding eight starters, while eleven more come back to the defense, of which six were starters. The Yellow Jackets' most powerful weapon lies in a gifted and experienced backfield. Eddie McAshan is back at quarterback, as are a wealth of strong running backs. Last year, the 6-2/2, 180 1b. junior completed 110-223 passes for 1,138 yards and nine touchdowns. However, he was intercepted 21 times, setting a new Tech record for misguided aerials. Brent C-unningham, 5-7, 170, described by former coach Bobby Dodd as being one of the best athletes he has ever seen at Tech, anchors a solid ground game. Cunningham gained 740 yards last season on 44 attempts for a 5.1 average, including five touchdowns. In a single game against Clemson last year, he picked up 214 yards, a new school record. Rob Healy, Tim Macy, Kevin McNamara and Bruce Southall give Tech an excellent group of rushers, all being capable of making the big play at any given moment. "We figure they'll line up and try to run right over us," coach Paul Dietzel said. "They think they are so much bigger and stronger at run ning back. They'll try to hammer the living fire out of us. Besides. their great running attack, they are a fine screen team, with a real power offense." Larry Studdard led Tech receivers with 29 receptions, and is back again. Herman Lamm has been making a steady recovery from a knee in jury, and should see plenty of action. Rick Lantz and Scott Engel are the strong points in an offensive line that, though deep, may suffer from inexperience. Glenn Costello and Lantz will line up at the tackle spots, as Pete Cordrey and Engel are at guard. John Callan is the probable starter at center. The Jacket defense is highlighted by two fine linemen, and a quick pair of hawk-like defensive backs. Brad Bourne and Smylie Gebhart make up the right side of the Tech line, and have both proved their worth. Gebhart, 6-1, 206, trapped the opposing quarterback 13 times last year, while he came up with 17 'big plays'. Bourne, a former defensive end, was second in both categories with 10 and 14, respectively. positively 4th st. our shoes MALL ST Brent Cunningham A FEW ITEMS FOR FALL IMMEDIATE APPROVAL ON STRA WBERR Y PA TCH CHARGE CARDS PATCHWORK PRINTED APRONS Long $10.00 Short $5.00 4/O / N$22.00 with sunburst; lips etc. KNIT TOP $16.00 Creme, Green, Navy, Redo Sizes 8, M, L o ASST.
