According to Head Cheerleader, Bryant -Wright, the award was in "'recognition of the squad's at titude. hard work and ability to hustle." It was one of the 10 awards presented at the camp. The camp was held Aug. 22-27 in Hattesburg, Miss., where 540 cheerleaders represented 65 universities and colleges throughout the nation. In addition to the Spirit Award, The Gamecock cheerleaders were given a live gamecock equipped with spurs on its feet to serve as a mascot at the games. They began practice at 8: 630 every morning and continued (with the exception of meals) until 11:00 or 11:30 p. m. During this time, they learned three new cheers per day, prac ticed stunts, tumbled and attended workshops. Wright said that as a result of attending the camp, the cheerleaders returned with promises of more enthusiasm, better cheers and more spirit. "The Squad has many new stunts and routines to learn and is still developing its ability, but we are willing to work hard and are very enthusiastic," Wright said. Plans for the coming year will include a "'new tradition": The Silent Treatment. They were selected by a last spring by a special committee rather than being elected by the student body as in the past. The squad is composed of Sam.
