Virginia held a slim 7-6 lead as the Gamecocks went up for their last bats and had two outs when their championship hopes were shaken by freshman John Gam brells two run double. With its two game loss to Carolina, Virginia drops. to fourth place in the ACC with only a -mance to be in a possible four way . Maryland, after dropping a two game series with Clemson 3-2 and 1 1. still retains the lead by virtue of one more win than the Tigers. Should Clemson split with Duke and Wake Forest, and Virginia win over the Terps, a four way tie het ween Maryland, Clemson, N.C. State, and Virginia would result. Should Clemson lose one of its two reamining games while Maryland beats the Cavaliers, the Terps will win the conference outright. Carolina, after being eliminated crom the race with the. double loss to Maryland, has only its record and next year to consider. Carolina pilfered five bases from Virginia Sunday, and managed to outrun fielder's choices twice.
