Gamecocks. having problems getting enough base hits By CHARLIE SENN Sports Writer The USC baseball team, while having played some fine baseball, also has the misfortune of being unable to combine fine hitting with good pitching and defense play. The Citadel took advantage of that fact Wednesday night to put down the Gamecocks, 2-0. Citing the same reason as in several past loses, assistant coach June Raines said simply, "We're not hitting. Eddie Bolton pitched a great game and defensively we did well. We made one error which they scored on, and when you make only one error a game in college you're supposed to win, but we didn't last night. "Most of the guys on the club are just striking out far too much,"' said head coach Bobby Richardson. "There isn't a whole lot you can do about hitting problems; either you hit or you don't, and these guys just aren't hitting now. "I still haven't lost confidence, though. We will have to win practically every one of our conference games and come out around 10-4 to win the conference, but I'll believe we can do it until I'm mathamatically proven wrong. "We'll just have to go after every game as if it were the last one. "At The Citadel," said Richardson, "'there were two identical situations in the game. In the third inning, we had runners on first and third with only one out. It was a beautiful scoring opportunity, but we flied out and grounded out with the next two batters. "Then in the fourth inning, they (Citadel) had the same opportunity and capitalized on it with a single to score. "Those two were the only scoring chances for either team, and they were just able to use theirs,"' said Richardson. Turning to one of the happier events of the game, Richardson spoke of a phenomenal defensive play by centerfielder Billy Petoskey. "The highlight of the game was probably the greatest catch I've ever seen in my life including the years I spent with the Yankees. Billy made a beautiful diving catch out in center field, knocking himself out when he hit. The cadets there gave him a standing ovation. "Then when he came to bat the next time, he hit a double,'' added Richardson. The Gamecocks leave tonight for Raleigh to complete their final road trip with consecutive games with N.C.
