State-I Relays for col By DAVID DRAFFIN Sports Writer Come Saturday morning the ninth annual Carolina State Record Relays will get under way-a spectacle that will include John West: USC head coach not only the finals in high school competition but also the qualifying and finals for some 566 university division athletes. "It's gonna be a real good meet," commented Gamecock Head mentor John West. "I hope that the student body will take advantage of this opportunity to see the fine athletes that will participate in this meet," West continued. The Carolina State-Record Relays are sponsored annually by the University and Columbia's daily newspapers-The State and The Columbia Record. The meet in the university division alone will bring together the best cindermen of some 26 colleges and univer sities from throughout the Eastern United States. Admission Saturday will be $3 for reserved seats, $2 for general admission, and $1 for students. Tickets will be available at the gate or in advance at the Carolina ticket office. A special feature of this year's meet will be the special in vitational 100-yard dash that will feature Dr. Delano Meriwether, a I Bell B. Dr. Meriwether who had never before competed in track in either high school or college burst upon the track scene with a 9.6 in the 100 yard dash. "He is an amazing guy to never have run before and come out and run a 100 in 9.6 at 26 years of age," West chuckled. "He'll be something to see," West commented. Meriwether has since his first exhibition stunned some of the world's best sprinters. He has been acclaimed by some as perhaps potentially the best in the world. Carl Wood of the University of Richmond, last year's outstanding collegiate athlete trophy winner, will compete in the same two events he won here last year. He will head up a field that includes three other first place winners from last year. Saturday could be a day of many broken records as many of the athletes hold times consideraly better than the track record. For example, the 100 yard dash record is 9.5 set in 1967 by James Lee of Maryland. Johnson C. Smith University has two 9.3 sprinters in Joe Johnson and Tim Beamer and one at 9.4 in Louis Jewell. The meet will open at 10:15 A.M. Saturday with high school field event finals. The high school and college running events are scheduled to begin at 12:30 P.M.
