WalkE By JOHN GASH Columnist The elections are today. This is a time which USC students do their damnedest to prove that they do indeed exist in apathy. Campaigning has been of a low key nature and the virtues of the respective individual platforms vary. But there is a candidate who deserves the chance to demon strate his abilities in office: Harry Walker. As we all know-thanks to {people who like to play upon such a thing- Walker is black. But the The inno( Rv ARTIHUR HIPPE Columnist No one is more excited about the impending marriage of Trish and Ed as Mrs. Hermione Katz, the soft-hearted fry cook at the White House. But as she confided to her friends at the Hadassah Sodality Club, "It was, believe you me, ladies, a very near thing." Mrs. Katz said the evening before the enaggement was an nounced she had brought Mr. Nixon "a nice snack of cottage cheese and catsup." As Walker has said himself, the student body president should be elected because of his ideas. In reference to this conception that Walker will do certain things because he is black, some people have the idea that he has the black vote in his pocket. And I plan,' he says, 'rightly or wrongly, to do my duty.' "Then Tricia, such a beautiful girl. speaks up. 'But, Daddy,' she says. 'Ed and I asked you two months ago to announce our engagement.' One candidate said he had doubts about Walker's ability to conduct a proper and efficient office because of his inexperience within student government. Really? To me Walker's so-called inexperience has left him out of the nder about this, Trish,' says the President. 'I have always sought the middle ground between those who would render snap judgements and those who would procrastinate forever. While the final decision must be mine, I have, of course, asked the opinions of the Republican National Committee, and National Securtiy Council and my most trusted, in my judgement, advisors.' Now, Ed, I see where you are now, or have been, a member of Nader's Raiders.' "Up on his feet is this Ed, a fine looking boy. 'Yes, sir,' he says, bold as brass, 'and proud of it.' "My, you should see the President frown! 'There are many decent Americans,' he says, 'who always carp and criticize. That is their right,' he says, 'But I believe, let the chips fall where they may, in cherishing our precious heritages.' Such fine words! "Oh, Daddy, you are so right!' says Trish. Such a good daughter, she is. " 'And I see, Ed,' says the President, 'where your parents are in the Social Register. Now I don't care whether people are in the Social Register or not...' "Yes, sir,' says Ed, 'that's just what they say about you.' 'Is that a crack?' says the President. "Look here, you young radical-liberal... '"Hoo-*ee ! The First Lady, such a cool one, grabs the President's sleeye. 'Now dear,' she says, 'you promised never to talk politics with Ed.' "So the President--at heart he's a husband--gets hold of himself. 'You are, in my opinion, dear,' he says. 'right. I won't.' "Only, of course, not being able to talk politics, the President can think of nothing to say. In the ad a list of supporters was presented, and my name was among them. I am certain this was an innocent mistake, but I would like to set the record straight. I never solicited support for or endorsed the above mentioned candidate. My sympathies lie elsewhere. CHARLESDUCKER Platform Editor's Note: Marsha Mottel, candidate for secretary of the student body, wrote a letter to the editor which was published Monday. Due to space and content the letter was not published in Its entirety. Miss Mottel feels that her views and the letter as published misrepresent her candidacy. Through the regular newsletter, I feel that more students would become actively -involved in student government and thus make it a more effective organization of student representation. Also another problem involved with past service of this office is that the secretary did not have regular office hours nor did she devote enough time in keeping accurate files of Senate legislation. Too often she was involved with extra projects not directly related with her secretarial duties. As a result, it would be safe to say that no one, even the president of the student body, actually knows what senate bills have become statutes for our rcampus. Therefore, in my platform I a!sn proposed to establish and maintain order in keeping an accurate file system of all Student Government business. I also plan to keep regular office hours to maintain an effective channel of - com munication between students.
