Carver si Marylan' (Continued from Page 6) meeting and 12 points in the Terps :1 -30 win in College Park. 'White is a first rate player. Carver, who had the task of defending against the 6'0" ace did a good job," said McGuire. "John Roche is in a class by himself. Then comes Davis (Charlie), and White isn't far behind." 'I'm glad they (Maryland) didn't shoot at the first of the game like they did at the end," said McGurie. "It was a tough opener. Aydlett getting into foul trouble hurt us, but we had Joyce (Kevin) back. Without Joyce we would have been in trouble. "We're pleased with the win and thought Maryland played real well." USC's defense forced early first half turnovers, and Carver slammed home his first jumpshot from downtown as the Gamecocks jumped to and held a seven point advantage. The two teams traded buckets down the stretch and Carolina went into the dressing room leading 37-29. Maryland got its first break of the second stanza to pull within six, and had two chances to pull within four before USC started to pull away. All-America guard Roche warmed up in the second half to key the Gamecock after going two for nine in the first period. By going to the base line and driving the lane, he left the middle open for easy layups and finished the night with 18 points - 12 in the second stanza. Owens, in his battle with Denton for the rebounding title upped his average from 12.576 to 12.667. Denton pulled his average down from 12.600 to 12.615. "I wanted to be on top going into the tournament," said Owens, "but our game with Wake wasn't a game for a lot of rebounds. I think I've got my timing down, so I'm really going to try to win it." Owens felt Chrolina played well because they won, but added that they made "too many mistakes." The first team All-ACC performer said, "We won, and that's what -counts, but we should have won by more points. The game isn't controlled. We were in control." McGuire was pleased with the showing of sophomore Joyce, who has been hampered in the last six games with a leg injury. "His shooting wasn't as good, but he came back well. He played a full game, offense and defense," the Gamecock mentor said. Carolina fan finds way to ~see game Is there anything to what USC fans will do to see their team in action? Roche set me up. He draws so many people that it leaves Rick and me wide open." Carver also had words to say about the recent All-ACC team, picked by the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters Association. In reply to a sportswriter's question, he said, "It's too bad there's politics in basketball. How anyone cannot vote Roche on the first team is beyond me. They should vote for a player's ability, not whether they like him or not." The voting may foreshadow the Player of the Year selection. Only two players have a bona-fide chance at that honor: Wake Forest's Charlie Davis and John Roche. Davis was the only player unanimously selected All-ACC. I'm surprised they didn't shoot ninety per cent. Virginia played well, they deserved to win. We played good in the second hall, but Parkhill made the big shot." (NC's pressing defense was too much for the lowly Tigers. The Tar Heels played probably one of their worst games, but still easily outdistanced Clemson, breaking from a ten point halftime ad vantage to an easy second half. ''We are happy to win in the first round, said UNC's Dean Smith. We weren't as active offensively, but Clemson's defense had a lot to do with that. They're very aggressive defensively."
