ACC dran with touri By TEDDY HEPFNER Sports Editor The Atlantic Coast Conference opens its 18th annual ACC Tournament tomorrow witI' all eight teams in action during two .lff?rent sessions. Top-seeded North Carolina brings a 20-5 overall mark into the opening game at 1:30 p.m. against Clemson, eighth-seeded. The Tigers are 9-16 overall with a 3-11 mark in league play. North Carolina, whodropped a last season game to Duke, brings in a 11-3 con ference slate. Second-seeded USC meets seventh-seeded Maryland in- the second game at 3:30. The Gamecocks blasted the Terps 96-70 in the first meeting between the two in Columbia but dropped a 31-30 overtime verdict after leading by five with 25 second left in College Park. The Gamecocks welcome back soph Kevin Joyce who has missed the last month of action after undergoing surgery on his leg. Duke, winner of eight straight meets Ed Leftwich-less N. C. State in the first ame of the night session. Duke, with Dick DIVenzio and Randy Denton finally playing to expectations, smashed UNC and USC the last two meetings. The Blue Devils slammed Carolina by 13 and beat the Tar Heels by 11. Charlie Davis-led Wake Forest tackles Virginia in the nightcap. The Deacons, fourth seeded, and the Cavaliers, fifth-seeded, bring 16-9 and 14-10 overall records into the game with 7-7 and 6-8 respective family marks. None of the first round games will be televised. The semifinals, with the winner of the UNC-Clemson game playing the winner of the Wake-UVa contest and the USC-Maryland winner testing the Duke-State survivor will be televised. The finals are set for 8:40 Saturday night. North Caroiina has been the surprise team in the league. The Tar Heels were ranked as low as seventh in preseason polls, because, primarily, they were without the star. However, Dean Smith has done a tremendous coaching job and got the Heels to work as a unit. The Tar Heels have combined the ability to play as many as 10 men with a touch for hitting the open man - that has resulted in the number two spot in the nation in field goal percentage. Dennis Wuycik -heads the UNC lineup. Wuycik, recently named to the AIPlACC team, is WH'ro? *GRAND OPENING 2 Arcade Mall 133U Main St. Phone 254-2445 10OAM to 6 PM Long at ch rry Swim FEAfT abegins iey action leading the nation in field goal percentage while also leading the conference in free throw percentage. The 6-6 junior from Ambridge, Pa., Is very strong under the boards and has a fine outside touch. Soph Georg6 Karl provides most of the outside firepower. The second team All-ACC pick is hitting at a 57 per cent from outside. Carolina has gone - the bench more, partly by choice and partly because of the Joyce In jury, and will be able to call on more players this year. Also, an injury, which sent them out of it last time around, should be overcome easier. All-America John Roche, picked for his third year to the All-ACC first squad, still runs the offense but opponents have found that just stopping Roche from scoring doesn't stop Carolina. If the other stars in the league don't score it'll be awful tough for the teams to win, but USC has the firepower to win without Roche's scoring talents. The 6-3 senior merely feeds his teammates Rick Aydlett and Bob Carver outside or hits Tom Owens or Tom Riker un derneath. The outside abilities of Aydlett and Carver have spurred USC in their past few games. Aydlett fired in 20 fIrst half points in Carolina's 88-73 win over Wake last week. Roche only had four at the half but USC was ahead by seven points. Owens, All-ACC, -Is the leading rebounder with a 12.6 mark. Duke has blended together and finally got some talented sophomores playing with some talented seniors. The Blue Devils have the passing of DeVinzio and the Inside work of Denton and 6-9 Larry Saunders to go with the outside shooting of Rick Katherman, Richie O'Connor, and Jeff Dawson. Denton is the leading rebounder in the con ference with a 12.6 average. He is barely ahead of USC's Owens. Owens has a 12,576 mark, Denton's is an even 12.600. Davis is the top scoring machine In the league but that is not enough for the Deacons. If Charlie gets hot watch out - but lack of height and good depth-hurt Wake. Gil McGregor, 6-7 230, does the bulk of the work inside but is the only accomplished big man for Wake. Larry Habegger plays well at 6 6 but that's small compared to someone like Denton or Owens, Pat Kelly gives some help off (See, PACK, Page 7, Col. 1) C Skirt $18." 4 RING BOUSSAC of FRANCE PRINTS All-ACC USC's John Roche manuevc Owens in Carolina road garr selected to the All-ACC squad a All-ACi C arol R oche, By TEDDY HI Sports E4 Wake Forest's Charlie I selected to the All-ACC bas America guard John Roche r unamious selection by two vc was announced Tuesday.
