Letters to th Gameco towers ( DP.AR MR. BEEBE: Enclosed is an editorial from a recent edition of the Honeycomb, a weekly bulletin serving the residents of the Towers. I believe the sentiments expressed in this editorial by Ed Fennel are largely representative of the Towers' residents and a great many other USC students; therefore, I am asking that you reprint the article. Admittedly, it is plagued with an abundance of grammatical and typographical errors, but I am sure the pages of the Gamecock ( which is infamous for its lack of literary expertise) will not be tainted. J.Z. MCKNOWN Girls Open House DEAR MR. BEEBE: We feel that the new open dorm policy is fine for those who will benefit from it. We frankly don't feel that as women of Carolina that we will enjoy it that much. Our main objection and the only ob jection are the hours picked for Friday and Saturday. When we supposed to get ready to go out if boys are allowed in at 6 on Friday and 2 on Saturday? When do we shower and wash our hair when the boys are hanging around? It makes us absolutely furious because the hours chosen for these two days are at the worst possible times. Why not start the open dorm at 8:00 on these two nights? By then most of the running around should be done by the girls getting ready. Please i these rue go into effect-take the girls into con sideration. Make the opening of the girls and boys at different times. Undoubtedly, people will say that if a person doesn't want to par / DON K 'How to Fr SHOWS 1 -2 IT.6! msesne tas9 When Dinosaurs plus King Konj ,ck gets t1cism ticipate' then keep the door shut. We pay money to live in these dorms and we expect to be able to walk out in our own halls at any time and into our bathrooms without some boy lurking in the hall. We have a right to keep these boys away from the dorms at in convenient hours. We are sure that many people feel this way and we wish that they would make those feelings known. BA ABARA FRICKER JUDY HELLER CAROL BELL Credit the band DEAR MR. BEEBE: In reply to Miss Long's letter regarding the USC cheerleaders, I must say she came up with a solution to a problem which has been the concern of many. More spirit was shown during the last four games than has been expressed during the whole football and. previous basketball season by the USC students. The little spirit shown at previous games was not aroused by the cheerleaders but in spite of them; credit here is due to the pep band. I say "all the way to the NCAA" with the mighty Gamecocks and the Irish Reds to boost our fan tastic basketball team along. TIM MULLER Team Ungrateful DIEAR MR. BEEBE: We Gamecock fans were disappointed in the players reaction to a large crowd of sup porters, including adults and children who stood, some over an hbur in the rain, to cheer the Gamecocks Saturday, midnight March 6. The Gamecocks in turn gave very little visual sign of We deliver 4-11 PM USDA Choice Steak Sandwich 4-12 Weekdays 50*F,,Al" Day Sunday 50rOF (TABLE SERVICE ONLY) 256-7179 NOTTS mie a Figg' -5-7-9 PM Ruled the Earth SEscanes m .151 Perilous Drivers must be able to par one in order to avoid a confror at this space In front of the Ru4 gratitude, hardly a wave to these fans who were so loyal to get up in the night to come out. We feel that it takes more than just a game to make a star and therefore, even though exhausted, they should still give the last bow to their audience. We wonder if it is asking too much of the players for their consideration of the people who love them. We would like to hear the players side to this complaint. NAMES WITHHELD BY (EQUEsT Faulty Information DEAR MR. BEEBE: After reading the article on page two of the Gamecock of March 7 in which the members of the Towers Government, of which I am one, were labeled as not having much "good sense, grace, or in telligence," I can bnly Infer that you think the sensationalist views reported after the meeting with President Jones very few of which were from Towers Councilmen or members of the -Court--are ob sessions of the whole of the residents or the Towers and of all UNCLAIMECI 12UI BROADII (Hwy. Don't believe it. You must realize that an ef fective government consolidates the views of a wide range of opinions. I apply the adjective "effective". to this Council for the very reason that you find cause to criticise it. If not for the advances Mason Proffit Is Coming made in the area of open house by the Towers in the last few semesters. starting with sparse implimentation of open house, submitting to this administration, many petitions, resolutions, confronting administrators. having most of our efforts neglected, and after a referendum in.which the Towers, residents cast more ballots than there were votes cast for the SGA offices last year. the latest improvement on the open house policy 'would have been awaited for another three or four I FREIGHT EVER RD. 76) IE PUBLIC 14 P.M. tU SAT. We knew that if we asked for twice as much as we wanted, we might get a fourth of it. The more zeal we could put behind the issue, the better our returns on It would be. Realistically, not many of the more than 1250 residents who wrote in 24 hours open house on the referendum actually wanted or expected that much, fear of lack of privacy being the main determent to whole-hearted support for that extreme, although some argued that the chance of being em barrassed should be greatly out weighed by the benefit of increased social mobility. So what could one expect but that mome overflow of enthusiasm, in an effort to attain a good com promising position, should be evident in feelings of disap pointment after getting an in crease of twelve hours of open house instead of the 16 a great majority of the residents requested? Dissatisfaction with two thirds increase in open house hours would seem ironic I suppose, unless you had been% a part af the pressure that attained it from an administration which, as President Jones said, "granted no open house for 169 years." It was as if one draft animal pulled the whole six-team. although there are more than six dorms, wagon. The Towers Government was the main reason the open house policy has been changed. The other dorms have done relatively nothing for themselves in this area. I hope this or another very practical viewpoint of the Towers Government's actions will be printed in defense of such an ill based proclamation as we have been subjected to. It is a shame that an opinion based on so few facts can get into the newsprint to be seen by thousands.
