This year's swimming team possesses seven seniors that helped to contribute the necessary intangibles for such a record. 01 . these seven seniors, con sisting of three divers and four swimmers, five have qualified for the N;Ltional finals. All have been nstrumental in Carolina's success n the water this year. "These seniors are not going to be replaced," said head coach Alan Gentry. "Their leadership has been what has made this team. They seem to have an inate ability to do and say the right thing. "I've got a lot of respect for them." Trond Williams and Jim Weinzettel are the teams big sprinters and both have qualified for the NCAAs for the past three years. "Trond is the fastest man South Carolina's ever had," said Gentry. He is the fourth fAstest man in the all-time ACC and is nationally ranked." Pursuing Williams' unrecorded statistics, Gentry cited the swimmer's leadership abi bilities. "He is a great leader and s pn - excellent captain. Ave.,.. pace earn outstanding job as team leader. "Weinzettel's tremendous ac ceptance of responsibility is his greatest trait," said Gentry of his two event national qualifier. "He and ''rond really take care of the younger swimmers." Mike Fox and Mike Parker, though not receiving quite the recognition of the other two senior swimmers, quietly did their parts in the teams performances. 'ox is an excellent student of the tactics of what should be used in swimming," said Gentry. "He takes a number one role in our planning meetings, and some of his suggestions have really helped us in some of our meets. . Parker could very well be the hardest worker on the squad," Gentry said of his other sprinter. The engineering major "has never missed a practice since I've been here, and has probably added practices by working out extra on his own." Jack Moffet, Mike Mayfield, and John Thoder make up three members of the four man diving squad and all will see action in the NCAAs. "Moffet is an inspriation to the team," said Gentry. "He came here from Pennsylvania only as a state qualifier and worked real hard until finally in his senior year he has become a national qualifier. Alter dropping their first two meets the Gamecocks then took three in a row, dropped one, and swept through the rest of their schedule.
