Patters( discovered one of the documents t be a forgery. The document he found wa forged probably more than 7( years ago. Patterson came upon the forge document in a public records offic in Worcestershire while examinin a charter supposedly written in t 12th century that extended certai rights to an abbey. 'The handwriting seemed ver much like a 12th century hand, Patterson said. "I first becam suspicious when I noticed that tm letters ran together, a techniqu which wasn't in vogue until the en of the 12th century." But then Patterson foun reference in the document to Bishop Sylvester. "No Bisho Sylvester lived until the 13t century." he said. "I think th forger meant to write Bishc Simon who did live during the 12t century, but instead wrote ti present bishop's name." Patterson believps the charte was forged by a monk, not to gii the abbey more rights than t: Earl had given it, but rather 1 keep his files up to date. "TI original charter had probably bee destroyed," Patterson said "an the earl who had granted it died This charter was the olde document in the records office The man in charge was sad when told him his oldest charter was forgery." he said. I)uring the past five yeai Patterson had explored fo documents in England, FrancE Scotland and Wales. Learning the characters that make up the written language follows the learning of sounds and tones, Alber explained. The young professor is con vinced that using a native of China along with a non-native who had to learn a new language is the best approach in teaching Chinese to American students. Alber himself learned the language when the results of a test administered by the Navy showed he had an aptitude for languages. Hhe then took 54 weeks of intensive training in Chinese and sub sequently used it in several assignments in the Far East. He received his undergraduate degree at Harper College in Binghamton, N.
