At the Three Winners For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, At The Movies has nothing but good things to say about not one, but three currently playing films. The three films in question are "Little Fauss and Big Halsy," "Lovers and Other Strangers," and "Start the Revolution Without Me." All three of these offerings gave little advance warning as to their real worth, especially "Start the Revolution Without Me." "Little Fauss and Big Halsy" is the story of two men who race motorcycles for an almost living. Robert Redford of "Sundance Kid" fame does a superb lob of portraying the man who has everything except anything worth having. Redford is of course good looking, witty, worldly, and has all the presence of a cosmic winner. He has no trouble picking up any chick he wants, always has a wise remark handy and seems to have the world by the tall. Michael J. Pollard plays "Little," a semi pathetic bike mechanic who has ambitions of being a big money circuit rider. Pollard teams up with Redford and together the cosmic winner and the cosmic loser strike out to find their fortune. The story covers the eventual breakup of the 1 unlikely team. Pollard falls in love with a girl that Redford makes and from there on in, the partnership goes downhill. The strange thing is that when the duo splits up, it be':omes evident who the real loser is. f Redford gives all the appearances of being a v winner, but in the final analysis, he's nothing. s Nothing but a fool who pursues a dream that I doesn't exist, a fool who can't see that he's nothing. In fact, Redford is the ultimate pawn, g not only is he a loser, but he's packaged in the n wrappings of a winner, the complete letdown. d "Little Fauss and Big Halsy" Is a very good h film, it affords the viewer a good' glimpse at P some of the more real aspects of life, especially the "free" life. "Lovers and Other Strangers" is a film about some of the aspects of the not-so-fre, life. In fact this film deals with life in a cage, the cage of family obligations and expectations. Surprisingly, "Lovers" is an extremely funny film. David Susskind who directed and produced this low cost-high quality film manages to treat the subject lovingly, as well as with a degree of frustration and humor. "Lovers" deals with all aspects of marriage, all within the same family. On one level it deals Nith a couple who are about to be married, on snother it deals with a couple that have been 'narried six years and are getting divorced. On yet another level, "Lovers" shows you a couple that is supposed to have been happily married for some time. Suaskind is assisted by Gig Young and an otherwise unknown cast that )roves to be superb. "Start the Revolution Without Me" is perhaps he biggest and most pleasant surprise In some rne. It Is a film that deals with a fantasy about he French Revolution. The film Is so bizzare hat it is hard to Imagine that Mack Sennett did iot plan some of the slapstick chase scenes. Gene Wilder of "Producers" fame plays one ialf of lost twins, and Donald Sutherland from 'Mash" plays the other half. "S.T.R.W.M." Is Illed with something for everyone; there are vild chase scenes, double entendres galore, and ome of the funniest two man diliogues since )ean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Wilder, despite his lack of exposure is a comic enius. There are few, If any, men who can watch him when he gets -rolling as a well eveloped neurotic. Sutherland, too, redeems mself for his part in the last film farce he 3rticipated in, "Kelly's Heroes."
