From then on, the only thing in doubt was the final score. Roche tossed in twelve points from that point, while Owens netted 14. Carolina's second half surge was Duke's undoing. The Gamecocks shot nearly 60 per cent from the floor, while outrebounding Duke 25-13. An important statistic was in the turnover department, where USC surrendered the ball only three times in the second half as compared to Duke's nine. Roche was the game's leading scorer, hitting 12-23 from the floor, and garnering two of three from the charity stripe, for 26 points. Owens added 22, Riker 19, Joyce IS. and Aydlett 12. The Blue Devils were paced by Richie O'Conner, who had 21 points, and Katherman and Dawson, who scored 14 each. Denton was able to grab only seven rebounds and tally eight points in his short appearance. "Duke is a very fine basketball team with all those sophomores," said USC coach Frank McGuire. "They shot nearly 53 per cent in the first half against our zone. We very nearly had to pull out of it. "I thought this was an excellent game," McGuire continued. "Hard fought and clean. Our strategy was to run and this was the best we have played. No reflection on Notre Dame, but our team played much better against Duke." Owens tended to agree with McGuire. "I think we might have put it together. It took us about five games last year. We're off to a good start. "It's too early to rate Duke," he went on. "They're tough. Denton is a fine ball player. He probably had Ribock and Riker mumbling at him all night. I wouldn't want those two talking to me during a game." "They would have been a lot rougher if Denton had stayed in," Roche commented. "Their sophomores are real good. Our shots just started falling in. I'm still not sure what their plans were." During the second half of play, Roche was called for a technical nside Duke's Richie O'Conner lurday night. Carolina soundly '8 as the Gamecocks picked up f the young season and passed ng colors. Wekdays k Sandwich with Fries Regular 1.95 kdays And All Day Sunday LER VICE ONLY e 256.7179 Seat belts arn Roch By DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Writer Four minutes before game time Saturday night, an Ingenious onlooker had placed seat belts on the chairs of Duke head coach Bucky Waters and his assistant. The intent was good; the placing, however, was not. The belts would have had a greater effect had they kept John Roche and Tom Owens glued to the Carolina bench. Waters didn't score a point. His assistant was effectively sealed off from the boards. They had very little bearing on the outcome of the game. Roche and Owens did. USC ran, shot, and rebounded its way to a 98-78 victory over the Blue Devils. Two cold spells, one in the first half and the other in the second half, kept the game suspenseful. From the opening tip, the Gamecocks were on top. USC displayed an early blitz behind Roche, Tom Riker, Owens, and Kevin Joyce, enroute to an early 18-9 lead. All this despite the presence of Randy Denton...that is, on the bench. With almost six minutes gone in the opening half, Denton had amassed three personal fouls. When the big center first left the game. with 14:03 left, Duke was down 22-10. Joyce and Riker had each thrown in eight points. But from 12:10 to 4:11, the first lapse occurred, allowing those fans who had come to see a good ball game to get their wishes. A Rick Aydlett jump shot at 3:51 put Carolina ahead 38-33, while Roche threw in four more points sand wiched around baskets by Aydlett and Owens to put USC ahead 46-42 at the half. The thing that kept Duke within range in the first half was a phenomenal shooting percentage from the outside. Jeff Dawson, Rick Katherman and Dick DeVenzio all were hitting con sistantly as the Blue Devils hit 52.9 per cent from the floor. USC and Duke traded baskets as the second half progressed. D" Denton was back in the game, and appeared to be leading the un derdog Blue Devils back. He scored six quick points, bringing the score to 63-60 with 11:43 left. ic eld sat ds ia 56 ~s. iy. at ~rs ay me nt. the ' USC's Tom Riker movesi for a layup during action Sa defeated the Blue Devils 98.; their third straight victory c their first ACC test with flyi give USC the strongest corn 'S JugglertraPeze aL1f Delicious Stea Salad and French 50* Off 4-12 Wee TABLE: the Pn ns rip 1 S1 foul on a ittle tangle up with DeVenzio.
