Mousa,I and 'I lead By BILLY MOORF Sports Writer The USC freshman team this year will be centered around the play of the three scholarship players who are considered to be three of the best in the nation. One of these standouts is Rick Mousa, a 6-6; 220 pound forward who received first team All Indiana honors his senior year in high school. He averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds per game in his final season, and although ham pered by a foot injury in the In diana-Kentucky All-Star game, managed to pour in 16 points and pull down nine rebounds in only 12 minutes of action. Out of Silver Spring, Maryland comes a 6-4, 185 pound gun, who averaged 27 points per contest both his junior and senior years. Ed Peterson earned All Washington, D.C. honors and was named to several prep All America squads after he carried his team to a second place sfinish in the state with a 17-3 record. Another talented player was swept out of Archbishop-Malloy High in New York, bringing the total to three. This time it was All America and All-NewYork City performer Brian Winters who joins former teammates Bob Carver and Kevin Joyce who have already made their presence known on the Gamecock squad. As a prep standout he averaged over 25 points per game in his three years of active duty, and in his junior year teamed with Joyce to lead Malloy to the New York City championship. Joining the three scholarship players in the starting lineup will be Marty Woolbright and Jim Burke who' are presently on football scholarships. Both have good range and should be able to handle the rebounding chores. Woolbright is 6-5 and received All-State honors in the home state of South Carolina. Burke is 6-8 and has been nicknamed "The Killer" for reasons that will become ob vious when the Biddies open their season on Dec. 3 with the Quantico Marines. After playing for Coach McGuire at North Carolina, Donnie Walsh returved to his law practice where he was offered a position with then'former Vice-president Richard Nixon's law firm. He turned this lucrative offer down and returned to his first love, basketball. The 29 year old Walsh in addition to his duties as Head Varsity Assistant is the Chief Recruiter for Coach McGuires's famous "Un derground Railroad," which supplies a steady stream of talented young high school stars from the Eastern Seaboard area. He took over as Head Freshinan Coach in 1969 and has compiled a two-year record of 27-5. Frank McGuire says, "Donnie Walsh Is the finest young basketball coach in the United States. He has played a very im portant part in the building of our big-time basketball program at the University of South Carolina." Walsh takes the recruits off Frank McGuire's underground Peterson Vinters freshmarn express running from New York to South Carolina and transforms them into a tight-knit. unit thal performs as a whole. Last year Walsh had only one player over 6-1 but this didn't bother him as he created an exciting fastbreak offense which produced a 124 record against an extremely tougt group of foes. As usual, ther will be non scholarship players on the team that will be a big force in deter mining whether the Biddies have a successful season. e- j "3 t L ~ 3; Rick Mousa --~~ .~ .3,, ~ S.
