Speculation in most (#0 points toward a n0w conference composed of other ACC discontent, (Clemson and Maryland, certainly) and phps sorne present Independents, such as Virginia Tech. Whatever comes of the USC-ACC relationships, one thing I* made clear by the oard's statement: the University itends to keep expending and improving athletic WOWgrams. From the planned stadium expansion we gather that this applies to athletic facilities, also. Some students and faculty members feel already that the emphasis is toward a "professional" athletic program at Ih expense of the academic program of the University. Administrators and others who deal with the state legislature and the public say that only through the athletic program do the people of the state Identify with the University. Granted, the teams do a great public relations job for Carolina, as long as they win. As long as the trustees recognize the rightful place of athletics in this regard and in promoting "school spirit" we should have no problems. However, there is a fine line between a first-rate college athletic program and a "professional" one, and there is a fine line in regard to the emphasis which can be placed on intercollegiate athletics in relation to all the other many things which go on at a University. The balance is a precarious one. The Board must recognize it and respect it. Firs, the very credibility of the election is in question. It Is known that the machine use0d to score ballots malfunctioned. This was sup posedly not noticed until a day and a half after the election during the run-offs. An a result, the elections committee decided to hold some of Monday's results valid and declare some of them Invalid. 'They then .decided to hold same run-offs valid and some run-offs Invalid. A second run-off (the first valid one, according to the committee) was held Mriday. Some results of this third fiasco were clearly opposite the trend established in all earlier elections and run-offs. If this letter is confusing to the reader, think how confused the Elections Committee must be. A second reason I am demanding new elections In these races is that some elections committee officials were giving out false information. I personally witnessed one Poll official telling two voters they could not vote in a run-off they were fully entitled to vote in. When I brought this to the attention of the Elections Committee, nothing was done. A third reason for new elections is the poor planning and notice given to Friday's run-offs. Suf ficient prior notice was not given. Te entire fiasco took on a rail roaded effect. This is obvious from the total number of votes cast. Next, the method of reporting election and run-off results led to further confusion. Throughout the day, Wednesday, signs appeared and disappeared on the wall in the Russell House lobby. By the end of the day, original election results, run-off results, and recount results were all posted together. The positions involved are far too important to be decided by the questionable methods used. NAME WITHHELD BY REQUEST Liberal papers Dear Miss Manning: Liberal papers really do have a way of blowing news all out of proportion. "Our" reporters surely can't be as naive as they were made to appear in Wed nesday's articles and editorials. I happened to be entering the Eisenhower luncheon at the same time the staff members were being denied admittance. Perhaps I'm deaf, because I interpeted the conversation between the repor ters and Mr. Suber in a different sense than did your staff. It's probably true that they weren't invited, but not for the reason that "USC (is) not considered im portant to GOP". Your articles did not mention that this was an ex clusive luncheon, because of inadequate facilities, and the press table had to be cut short because of the lack of "elbow room" for the guests. I was with the last group admitted and we took the rest of the remaining seats. Your reporters obviously have a lot to learn about campaign functions. The Gameock rporters I saw were hardy up to par with the appearance of the rest of the assembly. Rlegardess of bow we all feel about appearances' now, political functions on the. 'semi formal level do require a unified appearance. Local Republicans also know how well The Gamecock tends to tear down conservatism, and we all would rather see no news at all rather than opinionated news. You must admit your fault in this area; otherwise, why was there the birth of the Gamecrock, a conservative campus paper last spring, unless to oppose your liberalness? Maybe if you tried to balance your staff with as many con servatives as liberals, you might find access to Republican or conservative functions a lot easier. Why not more Orientals? I think the teams are doing great as they are -Jackie Brown included. Is It that Mr. Spears thinks the team would be better with more blacks? This too is racial discrimination, is it not? Is Carolina to be made a shambles as some Northern in stitutions have been (I know, I live up there) as a result of being non selective? We will become like so many of the black colleges (albeit, a majority) which cater to lower ability students, lower their requirements, lower' their stan dards for passage of courses, and graduate students with what amounts to a good high school equivalent college diploma. This type of catering is usually passed off as "meeting the special needs of deprived groups" by special policies, special faculties and similar academically defeating procedures. Recruit qualified students; there are enough good students who are black, or socio economically deprived whites who work hard in the hope of some advancement. Get these people, not the chronically underachieving blacks and poor whites. As an added thought, as a soon to be graduated student, I would not (as an alumnus) give money to USC if requirements were lowered. No! We need requirements upgraded, not lowered.
