,USC C Byrd Ify TF.DDV 1FFNER1 Sporta Editor USC. coming off a big win over the North Carolina Tar Heels travel to College Park for a big ACC game with Maryland Saturday afternoon. Gamecock coach Paul Dietzel called the game "as important now as the UNC game was last week." Dietzel said. "In the conference a win is a win and a loss is a loss. It doesn't matter who you are playing." Tony Greene: heads defense Dietzel has been reminding his players all week that none of them were born the last time a USC team won in College Park. In 1946 USC won a last minute touchdown pass by halfback Whitey Jones. Since then the Gamecocks have won at home but have dropped 10 consecutive games at Byrd Stadium. The Terps lead in the overall series 16-10. Maryland also is the last ACC Suggs: r( Hy DAVID DRAFFIN Sports Writer "Well, it feels better than it has for the last two weeks, but it still could be better," said Tommy Suggs late Thursday evening, referring to his injured ankle. Suggs injured the ankle in the N.C. State game three weeks ago and is still hampered by it. It has slowed him in both games since State. Jackie Young has had to replace him late in the games. "In the VPI game I hurt it at the end of the first half," Suggs said. "After that I had it in a cast for four days. Last year USC won 17 0 enroute to a perfect 6-0 con ference mark. This year USC is 3-1.1 while the Terps are winless in five tries. Last year's starting quar terback. Jeff Shugars, has been beaten out by sophomore Bob Tucker. Tucker is an excellent scrambler and a good drop back passer. Jeff Miller, who led the Terp6 in rushing last year has been shifted to linebacker where Maryland seems to have a problem. Al Thomas. who enjoyed a great game against USC last year, has been injured most of this season. Art Seymore was moved from fullback to tailback to replace Thomas. Thomas has seen some action this season but has not been at full speed. He is expected to be near full speed Saturday. Scott Shank moved up to the fullback spot when Seymore was shifted. Shank is an excellent blocker but has gained only 35 yards in five games. The Terps have had problems on offense with fumbles and mistakes deep in their own territory. Against UNC Maryland turned the ball over inside their own 20 five .ady to go hit. The tackler rolled over on me. "I've had bad ankles since high school," Suggs said. When asked how it felt now he quickly added, "It feels pretty good. I'm at full speed and ready to go, I hope." The Gamecocks have not beaten Maryland at Maryland in the last ten times they've played there. "Dave DeCamilla and Rick Brown have bad ankles," Suggs said. "After the UNC game, (Candler) Boyd and Mooney have bad knees. But overall we're in good shape." S .. , I .. Don Ratcliff, the Terps leading receiver, is the starting split end and Bob Manhic is the top tight end. End Guy Roberts, 6-1 220, and safety Tony Greene head the Terp defense, which has looked good most of the year. Roberts is joined by Chris Cowdrey at end. Tackles are 6-2 235 Jim Watkins and 5-10 200 Pete Mattia. The Terps play a 4-4-3 defense with four linebackers. Ed Mc Manus and Miller split time at the left linebacker with Craig Geinger manning the right spot. Bill Reilly is the inside linebacker with Ted Steiner the middle linebacker. Greene heads the secondary where he is joined by Eric Moore and Len Massie. The Gamecocks will have ace quarterback Tommy Suggs closer to full speed than he has been since the N.C. State game. Punt returns can turn tide Most football coaches agree that the long punt return is the most devastating weapon in the game, a maneuver that can make or break a team. Since Paul Dietzel came to USC as head coach five years ago the Gamecocks once a year have come up with a long punt return that in each case has been a key factor in vic tory. This season's case in point came Saturday at Chapel Hill, when defensive halfback and kick return specialist Dick Harris fielded a North Carolina punt at the Gamecock three yard line and raced 97 yards to put Carolina ahead 14-7 over North Carolina in a key Atlantic Coast Conference game eventually won by the defending champion Gamecocks 35 21. Key blocks by roverback Jake Stone near the beginning of the run, by linebacker Benny Padgett at the USC 35, and by defensive end Kevin Mooney at the Tar Heel 35, when Mooney screen blocked North Carolina kicker Don Mc Cauley to clear the final obstacle, cleared the way for the fleet Harris. Harris is the fastest member of the Gamecock squad, having been timed at 4.5 seconds for a 40 yard sprint. In track last spring, he won the 440 yard relay, and ran the first leg on the first place mile relay team. The junior from Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., has run the 100 yard dash com petitively in 9.8 seconds. To refresh memories, those other long punt returns were by Bobby Bryant, 98 yards against NC State in 1966 in a 31-21 Carolina victory; 67 yards by Pat Watson against Virginia in 1967 to start the Gamecocks from a 17-0 deficit to a 24-33 win; 73 yards by Tyler Heliams in 1968 against Clemson to provide a 7-3 win; and 72 yards by Jim Mitchell against NC State in 1969 to key a 21-6 win. Bryant's 98 yarder in 1966 is the Atlantic Coast Con ference record. Harris' sprint Saturday was just one yard short of that. The frfshman team will be trying to make It two in a row after beating Clemson last week, 9-0. The Biddies expect a hard fought contest against a tough State team which boasts a 2-1 record. The Wolflets routed outclassed East Carolina, 64-13, but fell to a strong North Carolina team, 21-0. The Wolflets bounced back to dump the Wake Forest freshman, 31-13. Willie Burden is an excellent halfback who personally sparked State to their win over Wake.
