UNC won 53-20. "Maryland has a good kicking game," Powers said, "and they beVO good offensive backs. Last Year's leading ground gainer, Jeff Miller, has been switched to linebacker. They have some problems at linebacker but elsewhere on the defense they are tough. "Al Thomas, who hurt us last year, hasn't been at full speed," Powers continued. "He has been injured, forcing Art Seymore to move to tailback from fullback. Thomas should be ready by Saturday. "He is the type of runner that will find a hold. He's extremely tough," Powers said. "Last season's quarterback, Jeff Shugars, has been beaten out by Bob Tucker. Tucker is cangerous when everyone is covered on a working record bc tumbling catch in the end zone with less than five minutes remaining gave the Gamecocks a 7-7 tie with N.C. State three weeks ago. Saturday at Chapel Hill when the defending champion Gamecocks were one touchdown underdogs to unbeaten and pre-season ACC favorite North Carolina, Hamrick caught the winning touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Jackie Young with 6:14 remaining to break a 21-21 tie. The Gamecocks scored again on a 65 yard run by tailback Billy Ray Rice to upset the Tar Heels 35-21. Young found Hamrick all alone on the end zone as the Tar Heel defense, with third down and three yards to go, bunched up to stop the run. "It only took him three plays to get an interception against North Carolina and he hadn't played in over a year. "We think we have three super athletes in our secondary," Dietzel continued, "Bo, Tyler and Dickie (Harris) really are fine athletes. "We had a fine win last week against North Carolina," Dietzel said. "But now we have to get back to earth and get ready for Maryland. We're their homecoming game and they are going to be sky high. We just have to get ready to play a tough op ponent," oks Hamrick hasn't dropped many passes during his productive career. He became a starter early in his sophomore season and caught 11 that season for 155 yards and one touchdown. Last year, he caught 19 for 240 yards and one touchdown. Despite his 30 receptions, which placed him 13th on the Gamecock all-time receiving list, Hamrick found his starting job in jeopardy entering his senior season. Junior Billy Freeman had an outstanding spring practice and was listed as the pre-season starter. "A lot of players would have become discouraged upon being dropped to second team after starting for two years," noted offensive Coach Bill Shalosky, "but Doug showed us the type of player he is by just hanging in there, becoming more determined and winning the starting job back." Hamrick now has 50 career receptions, which ties him for seventh place among all-time Gamecock receivers. He has gained an even 600 yards with his pass catches and has scored four touchdowns. His blocking -- an all important phase of a tight end's game -- has improved greatly, and head coach Paul Dietzel ranks the North Carolinian as the top tight end in the ACC. The Gamecock cheerleaders under the direction of Dean of Men Eugene Cooper and the pep band under the leadership of assistant band director Pat Wylie will be on hand to par ticipate in the sendoff. "We only have three scholarship boys so there are plenty of positions open." The varsity welcomes four starters back from last year's team that finished 25-3 and 16-i In the. tough ACC. Two time ACC Player of the Year John Roche returns along with 6-11 Tom Owens, 6-10 Tom Riker and 6-8 John Ribock. ''it will be -hard for us to post more victories than our great 25-3 team of last year," said coach Frank McGuire. "You lust don't go 14-0 in regular season ACC competition every year. But we will have a strong team capable of going all the way." Rick Aydlett and Bob Carver, who did vital relief work coming off the bench last year, also return. Aydlett is a 6-7 sharpshooter while Carver is a 6-2 playmaking guard. Top prospects from a 12-4 frosh team are Kevin Joyce, Danny Traylor, Casey Manning and Jimmy Powell. "We're in good physical shape already," McGuire said. "All the boys could play 40 minutes right now. They've been working out since the end of last year. They never take a rest." McGuire disspelled any questions about redshirting some of his sophomores. "I've never redshirted anyone and I don't plan to start now," he said. "I never even gave it a thought. "We recruit quality, not quantity," McGuire continued. "We only have three boys this year, four last and four the year before. That's 11 scholarship boys in three years. "We have fewer boys on scholarship than anyone else in the nation. And to be ranked number one with that distinction is quite a ac complishment." I can remember when South Carolina was never ranked in anything. "Now we have a fine program," he continued. "With our football team doing so well and our basketball team highly regarded we have one of the best athletic programs in the nation. Our facilities are second to none. "We have the coliseum and after they finish enlarging the stadium we'll have the two best places to play in the country. "This brings a certain amount of respon sibility," McGuire continued. "Everyone is gunning for you when they know you are tough. The other teams will play better against you when you are ranked. "We're looking forward to a good year, but we'll have a night when the ball just won't go into the basket," he said. "We'll slip somewhere and get beat. But I hope that it will be in the regular season and not in the tournament. "Our single goal this season is to win the tournament. The season means nothing unless you win that." "We have a tough schedule and we might not have the same great record we did last year, but we won't play anyone without making them sweat a little. We have to play one of the top teams in the nation in a hurry. "Notre Dame is our second game and they are tough. We have a real battle on our hands. But even if we lose that one or another one we will bounce back.
