grace of this writer's diligence,
perseverance and ingenuity, and of
course by permission of the wise
editors of The Gamecock, a new
era for Gamecock readers com

The Gamecock will, each week,
publish this column to be devoted
to graduate student affairs-both on
and off campus. Should a week go
by without such affairs, we will
attempt to expurgate a few from
the past or future.
If you are getting the idea that
this is to be a gossip column and
you like that idea-great! On the
other hand should this not be your
cup of netor, read on.
It is well known that graduate
students are generally as
dependable in their apathy as Joe
Petty with his plaudits to the
victim of a 50-0 U. S. C. romp. If
you wish to take issue with the
former remark I suggest you
speak to a graduate student
representative to Student Senate.

students in these dorms, especially
for the coeds. These are university
dormitories--and should,

University. The idea of not being
able to walk down -the street
without constant worry of being
attacked Is reason enough to take
stronger measures toward this
problem.
The moving of the bus stop will
not completely solve the problem.
It is not always the people waiting
for the bus. Certainly, the
University should be able to solve
this problem In one of these two
ways, at least.

That was a good and con
structive editorial on "Students in
Danger, "(Sept. 30). My letters are
mailed.
I am a mother of an 18-year-old
freshman girl in Columbia Hall.
You can imagine my concern for
her safety. She has a night lab
which requires her to be out after
dark.
Constructive action to protect
the girls must be taken quickly and
effectively or we parents can not
allow our girls to live in this en
vironment.

I have a car. When I get off work
(at 5 p.m.), I am forced to move

lot. -I do this, because L.iere are no
street lights anywhere near the lot.

institution are never (or hardly
ever) softened by ameliorating
ideas. Inconveniences caused by
faculty and administrative needs
for expedience continue for sheer
lack of having them aired. Though
the years spent at the University
by graduate students most often
exceed the number spent by un
dergraduates we remain a remote
but paradoxically a very prac
ticable part of the University
family.
Let it be understood, the
previous remarks not withstan
ding, this column, under this
writer's authorship, will not
become a vehicle for contention or
a lexicon of "how to do it" facts. It
will presume to make reasonable
commentary on events and
problems of concern to graduate
students (whether they are aware
of them or not), and we see no
reason why these columns should
not be incidentally of interest to the
entire academic community.

Doar Miss Manning:
Sunday a friend and I were in the
basement of South Tower doing our
laundry, and we had gone into a
nearby room so I could read to her
(she's blind). While we were there,
someone stole my entire box of
detergent.
South Tower is supposed to be an
honor dorm, and if someone was
hard up for some laundry
detergent, surely she could have
taken enough to do her laundry and
left me the rest. It was rather
extreme to walk off with the whole
box.
A lot of fuss is made about,
getting into an honor dorm; one
has to have good grades and is "on
one's honor" while residing in the
dorm. It is sad that incidences like
this occur where supposedly
mature, intelligent and bonest
people are residing.
