Freshman football coach Jackie
Powers was less than satisfied
with his team's performance in the
season's opener against the
Citadel. The Biddies had seven
turnovers in dropping a 9-6
decision.
"I was dissappointed in our
overall performance," Powers
said. "We made far too many
mental mistakes, even for a fresh
man team in their first game."
On the other hand, the Biddie
coach was high in his praise of the
Bull-pups. "Citadel was very well
prepared," Powers said. "They
played extremely well. But we
should have beaten them anyway.
I did a poor job in preparation for
the game."

defeat: two crucial roughing the

Defensive back Dickie Harris

five punts and two kickoffs, and b
had one of the fine individual H
games of his career. Dietzel said, 0
"Dick Harris finally started a
running those kicks back the way
he did last year and we did a fine
job on the kicking game except for a
our kick coverage."
USC scored for the third time, '

"Normally, one kicking mistake
can turn the tide of the game
around." Powers said. "But we
had four. They certainly did hurt
us. that's for sure.
"However." Powers continued,
"the fumbles and those two in
terceptions hurt, too." The Biddies o
lost five of seven fumbles that they I
committed, and turned the ball i
over twice on costly interceptions. i
Powers singled out linebacker
Dana Carpenter, and defensive
tackle Darrell Austin as having
fine performances. "They weren't
the only ones, however," he said.
"There were others."
Powers did not feel that the loss
would get his team down.
"However, that's up to the boys. p
They are a fine group of players, C
and I would think that the loss a
wouldn't hurt them. This team y
really ought to rank with some of l
the, better freshman teams that I
we've had here." he concluded.
