Freshman cheerleaders Nine freshman cheerleaders were selected yesterday afternoon out of a group of 45 hopefuls. Five boys and four girls will now begin preparations for the first freshman game on Oct. 1. Women students chosen were Sally Klingensmith, Beaver, Pa.; Ellen Paysinger, Long Island, N.Y.; Diana Hicks, Rock Hill; Lynne Mimms, Florence; and Lisa Leggett of Columbia will be the alternate. Male cheerleaders are Mike DeMauro, Princeton, N. Y.; Randy Kellner, Spartanburg; Perry Wood, Spartanburg; Bryant Wrightf and Buzz Prescott both Augusta. The usual round of open horns, stag smokers, parties and suppers will be featured again this year. On Saturday, Oct. 3, the rusheW will receive bids from the fraternities which would like to have them pledge. This fail's rush is different from the past in several ways. For the first time in its history, USC has a black fraternity. Also, and this is indicative of the fraternities' emphasis on individualism and open-mindedness, a' 50-year-old man is among the rushees. Thir dly, this year's number of rushees represents a ten per cent increase. This increase in the number of Tyler outi Union to The Carolina Wives Club held its annual membership meeting Wednesday evening with Lew Tyler, director of the University Union, speaking on the "Univer sity Union and What It Has to Offer for Married Students." Tyler outlined some of the services that the union has to offer and told the wives about plans for improving the University's Bell Camp facility. He said that the Union was working on plans for a golf course and that he hopes by spring to get horseback riding. Midnight Madness! Fraternities are now trying to be more teaponsive to the needs of the individuals, McCausland said. No onger do they condone the tor tuous and pointless basing of new pledges. They are instead at tempting to attract young men interested in friendship and brotherhood-the traditional ideals which are the core of the frater nity. McCauand umed up the attitude of USC fraternities saying, "Fraternities at this uWversity have finally realfzed that if they refue to update themselves in accordance with the attitudes and beliefs of today's youth they will become extinct.. We realize this and are concentrating our in terests in this area. But it is not easy to combine our traditional values of brotherhood and friend ship with an updated fraternity system."
