Five persons identified as USC
students were charged Wednesday
in a warrant with rioting and in
citing to riot at the campus ad
ministration building Monday
afternoon.
The five were identified as Ralph
White. Paul Gumm, Ralph
Courtney. Jack Atwood and An
drew Skarbek.
Authorites said Wednesday
afternoon that none of the five had
been arrested.
Bruce Roberts of the Univer
sity's security division signed the
warrant issued by Columbia
Maistrate H.E. "Buck" Watts Jr.
Jones,

building were being investigated.
*"Proper action will be taken at
the proper time". the president
said.
Jones said that "every person
here has been instructed to use
violence as a last resort."
He noted that if highway
patrolmen had tried to clear the
administration building Monday
afternoon. "there could have been
b)loodshed and death."
-NSo tar. there have been no shots
fired", he. said, although Jones
would give no definite pattern for
withdrawal" of National Guard
smen and highway patrol, he told
the student group that it was
probable that when the situation
had quieted down sufficiently, the
curfew would be lifted on an ex
perimental basis. He said then if
everything remained quiet, the
National Guard would leave.
'For each one of you here I
.expect you to tell at least ten of
your fellow students", he said.
"The nature of the situation Is
determined by the number of
straight people who go out into the
streets" said Jones.
Replying to one student's
question concerning the inability of
students to study on campus
because of the noise and tear gas.
Jones said that he had asked
professors to be sympathetic.
Jones, following the discussion,
addressed the group on several
issues which have been blamed for
creating certain student dissent
He said "That a student
government group was studying
the present situation at the Russell
House. and if he was given a
reasonable set of alternatives by
thema to the Ru..ell Huse. polnc
man tradition
arrants
Watts said the '.warrant was
prepared by the S.C. Attorney
General's office.
The affidavit of the warrant said
that the five at the administration
building "did then and there
unlawfully and riotously assemble
and gather together to forcibly
enter said building where a
committee of the Board of
Trustees was meeting on matters
of importance; that the aforesaid
did forceably enter said building at
said time and place for the purpose
of disturbing he peace of the State
of South Carolina, to obstruct
public officers of this State, and to
meets
he believed that the present police
enforcement of the building could
be changed.
Speaking indirectly about
Itichland County Solicitor John W.
Foard, as the prosecutor "down
the street" who has stirred much
controversy around the Univer
sit v. Jones told the group not to
worry about him.
No one has asked for any
transcripts eof the UF~O trial l," he
said. "and no one has given us any
transcripts."
Jones said that the University
subscribes to the college code of
academic freedom which he said,
covers the whole thing quite
adaquately.
"It is a lot of noise," Jones told
the group. "don't let it shake you."

In the Men's Towers, which have
been the sight of two demon
strations in the last two nights,
students occasionally shouted at
the few passing National Gtuard~
jeeps. Studying was something
tried but hardly accomplished.
The Guard had shifte from the
Campus Security Building to i

It's just impractical to close the
University, Governor Robert E.
McNair told a state-wide television
audience yesterday afternoon.
MeNair pleaded for calm on
campus and, reassured parents
that their offspring are safe on
campus.
The governor said that if classes
were suspended, students would be
restricted to their dorms.
If the campus was closed, he
said, it would take about 48 hours
to clear all students'from the
campus because over 2,000 live
more than 300 miles from
Columbia and there are % number
of married students living in
Un iversity apartments.
, l'he governor also pledged
Wednesday to investigate charges
