The ACC Tournament, which determines the conference championship, has been revamped for the first time this year. The opens In the 880 yard run Kaczka, with his best time of 1:53.1, will get a stiff test from Phil Wilson of Duke and Kenny Helms of UNC, who have both run faster half-miles this year. The 120 high hurdles will see Novo, who has the best time in the conference this season at 14.3, run against the Bush brothers of Maryland. Marshall has run a 14.4, while Marvin has done as well as 14.6. Although Harris is not in the top of any event, he has been a threat in the 100, 220, 440 and also the 440 and mile relay teams. Wake Forest's Jack Dolbin has the ACC's best times in both the 100 and 220, while the Deacon's John Danforth is the top 440 man. Maryland's John Baker is the fastest miler with a time of 4:06.4, eight seconds better than Algie Sims of USC. During the regular season a team gets one point for each conference match that it wins. The same goes for the tournament, and the team that ends up with the most points is the champion. The field events should be dominated by the Terps, as they have the top men in several events. In the javelin, Jack Bacon and Dave Reiss-both of Maryland are first and second. The Terps also have the top shot putter in John Hanley, and the top discus man with Russ Frame. For the jumping events the Terps also have a strong cast. Mike Neff is tied for the best long jump, Joe David has this year's best high jump, Buddy Williamson is tied for the best pole vault and Mike Neff has the second best triple jump. The Gamecocks play Virginia in a doubleheader at the Roost tomorrow beginning at 1:30. Sunday they will play a single game against conference title con tender Maryland. Against the Citadel yesterday Bolton gave up four hits and let only one Citadel runner advance as far as third. Only two reached second. The big righthander seemed to get stronger in the late innings, as he struck out three of the last four men he faced to record his sixth victory against three losses. USC Scores in Fourth The Gamecocks picked up an unearned run in the fourth as shortstop Butch An derson walked and stole second. Bruce Pudlock hit a sharp one hopper back to the mound for what looked like an easy out. But Bulldog hurler Leroy Allen threw the ball wide of the bag at first, allowing An derson to score and Pudlock to advance to third. Pudlock was unable to score as Caldwell grounded out to short and Don Stanley bounced to second. Allen kept the Gamecocks in check until the seventh when Tony Livonnese walked and stole second, following the same pat tern Anderson had followed in the fourth. Gary Lance struck out, but centerfielder Donnie Churchwell cracked a single to left to score Livonnese from second. Get Four Hits The Gamecocks got only four hits off Allen. He had given up only two until the seventh when Churchwell and Bolton both got to him for singles. Don Stanley and Tommy Moody had the other two Gamecock hits. The Bulldogs got one hit in each of the first two innings, but were unable to push a runner into scoring position either time. Bolton was in trouble only once during the game. Citadel rightfielder Joe Davis opened the fifth with a single, but Bolton got Bryan Burns to ground out to first, then got Jerry Wise to bounce out to short for the second out. Moody Saves Day With Davis on third, catcher Paul Plunkett hit a blooper over second, but Moody scrambled back in time to make a running, one-handed catch for the third out. Coach Bobby Richardson substituted freely throughout the game, using 14 players in all. The USC record in the conference is 8-10. They can finish the season with a winning conference record if they sweep all three games this weekend. The Gamecocks will close their season Tuesday against Georgia at the Roost.
