Fickle fin television they call it "the fickle finger of o*."' Perhaps we should call it "the dastardly diidocated divot." We award it to Dr. Thomas F. Jones for two outstanding -we are thankful that they are not commonplace - performances this week. The first was the University Tricentennial Convocation. The ceremony and speech should have been very serious, solemn, decorous and dignified. It was not. The only class there was represented by British Ambassador Freeman and the USC choir. They were fine. The chaffer from the podium was almost inane and at times bordered on the ridiculous. Gov. Robert McNair got up to welcome the ambassador -but it turned out that he was merely announcing his departure in the middle of the ceremony. Bad enough, but the ceremony I would have been a bit better without his extolling I the wonders of a barbeque back home, the trials of being governor,'the problems of scheduling a Tricentennial celebration in Allendale or inviting everybody else to leave with him to see the real borrowed helicopter that he was going to ride to Allendale in. Next came President Jones with several minutes of description of the choir - which the audience already knew were fabulous - and among other things called them "the most feminine group that I know." The men in the choir seemed to really appreciate that. Jones then asked for a big hand for the choir. Deserved but not very decorous in the midst of an honorary doctorate presentation and convocation. Senators Philip Hart and George McGovern iave authored a bill to "provide every person vith an adequate remedy to protect the air, vaterland, and public trust of the United States rom unreasonable pollution, impairment, or lestruction." Finally someone has gotten the right idea - alow, the public to protect themselves. Under the Hart-McGovern bill citizens can sue other citizens, government agencies or anyone else they feel is polluting or allowing pollution. It has taken a long time to realize that pollution can make civilization terminal. Now the red tape may be disappearing so we can go about the process of cleaning up without de facto protection of polluters by government red tape and self-interest. ier of fate Meanwhile, the city police were outside Icketing cars. Of course, the F1P cars at the front door were not ticketed and iere was an officer to see that no such space fas taken by a peon. Last night President Jones used the panel after r. Elsenbud's lecture on pollution, to address ie captive audience on the deplorable ACC ligibility rules. "There are 700 students here rho can not participate in ping pong, volley ball r golf," Jones told the people, because of the .quirement that ACC athletes have a minimum f 800 on the College Board SAT. Not that there are conference sports in ping ong or volley ball and if there were, USC robably wouldn't participate because we seem ) have to spend almost all our money on football nd a little on basketball. We don't participate in kCC soccer, rugby, lacrosse or wrestling. What did it have to do with the subject? Well, 'resident Jones, he had been working on the riatter all day; It was probably on his mind, and e appreciated having an audience. Jones said that self-denial wouldn't work. Ieople won't stop reading thick newspapers, mit their familles-or limit the size or power of heir cars. He said he wouldn't. CES k Pit [CKENS ST. psetting After being told that this policy was recommended by the University Union Board of Governors and then passed by the USC Trustees, we discussed tho policy with several - student members of the Union Board. Student members indicate that the present security policy is not at all what the Board of Governors had in mind when it approved a policy for the use of the Russell House. At the time passage, the policy was construed to apply to 1) young children who were running about in the building and disturbing the meetings of student groups and 2) the procedure of checking ID's while arresting suspected drug pushers. At no time during the discussion by the Union Board was there mnition of security guards, signs on all doors, a guest register, or the ID rejilrement. We therefore feel that the University Administration has twisted the policy to the point of harrassing students unnecessarily. We vigorously protest the im plementation of a Gestapo security policy for the Russell House as a gross infringement on the rights and students and as an attempt by the administration to create fur ther friction among the various segments of the university com munity. Jones also criticized any effort to "return to nature" and called for making"h world "a better place for man." He described nature as "chaos." Jones next surprised the audience by deploring the academic requirements of the Atlantic Coast Conference for several minutes. Main ST, IWOLF at GALLO's ut Tickets are) esday, Thursday. S ONL.Y H STUDENT CUSTOMER EELS, SANDALS, OR ANY PAPPAGALLn Policy u Dear Mr. Wasnamaker: We are extremely concerned and angered by the administration's recent implementation of a "security policy" for Russell House. This "policy" includes the placing of signs on the building doors which make guests feel unwelcome, forces them to be accompanied at all times by a USC student, faculty, or staff member, and requires that all guests sign a register at the information desk, indicating the time which they entered the building and the. purpose of their visit. After all this, guests, even when properly registered, are forced to wear identification tags, making them feel both uncomfortable and conspicuous when in the Russell House. As members of the University Community, we vigorously protest this arbitrary, unnecessary security policy for a building which is supposed to serve as the campus "student center" In the first place, this security check is an improper infringement on students rights; in the second place, we find it difficult to un derstand how USC officials can claim that funds are not available for legitimate student needs (such as parking garages, MEF com munity center work on Wheeler Hill, dormitory improvements, etc.) and yet can immediately find excess funds to employ "security guards" to harass students and their guests in Russell House.
