The Gamecocks dropped a 4-1 decision to non-confernee foe Davidson Tuesday, which dropped their record to 4-1 overall. They remain 1-2 in the conference with a winover Wake Forest and a pair of losses to the Duke Blue Devils. North Carolina won the con ference title last season with a 23 11 overall record and a 14-4 mark in ACC play. The Tar Heels are also 4-7, this season and, 0-1, in conference games and have so far failed to live up to their pre-season expectations. Eddie Hill, one of the most versatile performers in the ACC, is the leading Tar Heel hitter and also the leading pitcher. He is hitting .416 and his won-lost record' of 1-0 His ERA is 0.60. Pres Ruddell is tied with Hill at .416. They are the only UNC players over.300. Gammack is hitting .321 but takes a back seat to centerfielder Dick Greer and first baseman Kelly Sparger who are hitting at .361 and .375, respectively. Other top hitters for the Wolf pack include, leftfielder Tommy Smith (.289) and Randy Mc Masters (.273) the second baseman. The Gamecocks will be out to avenge last year's loss to the Ben Vaughn-led Georgia Tech team in what was probably the most ex citing meet of the year. Vaughn, in what former track coach Weems Baskin said was the finest one man performance he had ever seen, won the 100, 220, anchored the 440 relay team, and then came from behind to anchor the mile relay team and win the meet, which was tied going into that event. Vaughn is gone, but the Yellow Jackets aren't hurting. According to Coach West, "They may be the strongest team we have faced. They placed in the mile relay, 440 relay, pole vault, high jump, and broad jump in the State-Record Relays. As if that isn't enough, the Gamecocks will be without the services of ace freshman sprinter and broad jumper Jimmy Small, who pulled a leg muscle jumping against Duke. "We'll replace him with Billy Novo in the 440 relay, but needless to say his loss is going to hurt," added Coach West. "If you have a national program in several sports, you're very lucky," Dietze said. "I think we'll have a national contender in track in a very short time," he said, "and we've obviously already got a great name in basketball." During the past two YOar the athletic department hO been plowing money into the DVra program. The baseball neid at the Roost cost. the department $35,A and the all-weather track at the Rex Enright Athletic Center cost $37,000.. Dietzel's next project is, of course, enlargement of Carolina Stadium, and then the department plans to concentrate on impr.ving the swimming facilities. The immediate goal will be construction of an outdoor pool somewhere near the Roost, followed by the construction of a natatorium inside the George J. Terry Memorial Sports Center, which is now under construction. The indoor pool may be financed in part by a federal grant amounting to 50 per cent of tthe total cost. Dietzel explained that the federal government will fund a mathing grant for construction of a pool with the stipulation that the pool be used only for recreation, physical education and for athletic events as long as no admission to the events is charged. Cost of the indoor pool will be about $400,000, making the athletic department's contribution about $200,000. The outdoor pool, which will be used as a practice pool for the swimming team, will cost about $100,000. As for the dimensions of the pool, Dietzel said that the details would be worked out by Dr. Warren Geise, who heads the Department of Physical Education. Dietzel also said that he did not know whether the pool would have a separate diving well, a facility considered essential for naional events. 'Ie decision about the diving well will be made by Geise, Dietzel said.
