In a sport that dates back to a 1633 Church of England courtyard, geography is a very important factor. Football teams are built in cities, farms and even backyards. John F. Rooney, associate professor and head of the geography department at Oklahoma State University, has taken a sample of 14,500 football players to prove this point. Prof. Rooney mathematically figiured out that, on a national scale, out of every 12,500 people, one becomes a college football player. Using this average as a basis, Rooney devised a system to map the best and worst areas for producing football players both collegiate and professional. Solons praise Gamecocks The South Carolina Genral Assembly Tuesday passed a concurrent resolution "saluting the Fighting Gamecocks and paying tribute to their magnificant efforts on the basketball courts of the land during the 1969-70 season." The resolution, which was in troduced in the Senate and co sponsored by 46 Senators, read: "Whereas, the University of South Carolina basketball team last Saturday night completed its finest season in the history of that great institution; and "Whereas, this brillant band of warriors, by their outstanding efforts on the court, brought great honor to the University and reflected great credit to the school they represent by their gen tlemanly conduct and courage; and "Whereas, under the guidance L the undisputed master of this " profession, Coach Frank McGuie, South Carolina defeated every team in the Atlantic Coast Con ference twice and compiled a total season record of twenty-five and three defeats: and "Whereas, despite certain matters which transpired at Qiarlotte on Saturday night, this truly talented team remains and will remain No. 1 in the hearts and minds of its loyal and grateful fans, Now, therefore, lBe it resolved by the Senate House of Representatives con curring: "That the General Assembly salutes the Fighting Gamecocks of South Carolina at the conclusion of this most brilliant, exciting and rewarding season and wishes each member of the squad and the No. 1 coach in the nation continued success in the years ahead.
