St. Bonaventure is led by its All America Bob Lanier who is averaging 30.4 points and 15.8 rebounds each game. Lanier, a 6-11, 265 pound center is definitely the major worry for the Wolfpack Thursday, but the starting team as a whole is hitting 50 per cent from the floor and scoring at an 89.5 clip for the season. Norm Sloan and his Pack will counter with All-ACC Vann Williford, Rick Anheuser and Paul Coder. The Pack, which moved to tenth in the AP final poll, enters the game with a 22-6 record, losing only to Georgia Tech out of con ference. Williford, a unanimous selection to the All-Tournament team is averaging 22.6 points per game, with Coder at 18.2 and Leftwich 17.5 Coder leads the rebounding department at 10.4 while Williford is close behind at 10. Inc. or t Die Due to the efforts of many people, but mostly Coach Frank McGuire, some months ago the University of South Carolina was awarded a most coveted honor - the host school for the Regional Tournament of the NCAA Basketball Championship. We noted in the acceptance agreement that one of ethe stipulations was: we would have to forego par ticipation in the NIT (in case we should be eliminated in the ACC Tourney). It was a calculated risk but Coach McGuire was not afraid to accept the challenge. That's the way Champs are. From the very first, the greatest disaster was the chance of finishing second in the ACC-and lose out on both the NCAA and the NIT. Well, Saturday night in Charlotte the worst did happen. It was a bitter, bitter pill. But is did happen and it is over. That John Roche played at all is amazing. As we took him to the hospital Friday night, I was convinced that he would not make it. A lesser athlete would have been so bitter at his tough luck that he might say the heck with it. But amazingly, he played most of the game. If he had been his usual self Saturday night, who knows? And then, after the State loss, he tried to take the blame for the loss. He blamed no one else, just himself. That takes a real man. So. it's North Carolina State instead of us. Now it's time for the rest of us to act like Champs. N.C. State has been our warmest and closest friend in this ACC. They have always come to our aid always been our ally. Their Athletic Director, Roy Clogston nominated the South Carolina Athletic Director for the Chairman of the ACC Athletic Directors, the job I still hold. It was the same Roy Clogston who always championed Frank McGuire at conference Engin Join the diversifie of Martin and help creat4 technology in: Systems, Laun< Space Explorat Advanced Eleci Commu nicatior We're looking for qualified Electronic, Mechanical and them deep and rewarding ii long-term Research, Develol uation, and Production proj above. Isn't that exactly what Coach McGuire said? Now N. C. State mnes to our marvelous coliseum istead of US. What cduld possibly be gained by venting our frustratims on the Wolfpack by any unfriendly act? You do realize that we hope to have the Regionals back again - maybe even the National Final. Wouldn't ugliness be a sad commentry on the caliber of fans we have here in Columbia. And what a set-back it would be to the excellent basketball program that has been built here by Coach McGuire. No one is asking you to give the same enthusiastic support you have given to our great Gamecocks. But, let's be the same marvelous fans we have been al year. You are the best in all of the ACC, hands down! We appreciate you and we are proud of you. Let's show them how real champions behave. Coach McGuire has said it many times, "We have a first class operation, and that's the way we intend to be." Hundreds of people in Columbia have spent countless hours planning to show the NCAA people the finest Regional Tournament that has ever been held. What a real tragedy it would be if a few ill advised people would take it upon themselves to scuttle all of the advances that Coach MGuire and our great Basketball Team have worked so very hard to create in the past few years. Don't you think we can show the same kind of guts that Roche, Cremins, and their teammates have demonstrated over the past two years. We have won like Champions and now we have to show that we are still Champions, even after a tragic loss. N. C. State would do the same for us-they have proved that in the past.
