Overcoming a flurry of wild
passes and missed rebounds in the
first few minutes, the Carolina
Gamecocks recorded their 22nd
victory over Charlies Davies-led
Wake Forest , 67-51.
The 22 wins established a USC
mark for the most wins in one
season.With only the North
Carolina State game left, the
Gamecocks stand with a perfect
13-0 record in the ACC and 22-2
overall.
USC Coach Frank McGuire used
Bobby Cremins against Davies,
the same tactic he employed
against Wake Forest's high scorer
in the team's first meeting.
Davies scored 21 points,but
made only seven of 23 shots.
"He(Davis) is just a great
player" Cremins said. "I guarded
him no differently than I would a
bigger man. I am only out three to
stop him from scoring."

"so, he has to be stopped. You

The Gamecocks were behind
from the first tipoff to 9:52 in the
first half. A John Ribock tap-in
pulled Gamecocks ahead and
USC gained a half time advantage
of seven, 28-21.
The start of the second half was
reminiscent of the Davidson-USC
second half. The Gamecocks hit a
cold spell. The Deacons got hot and
went ahead at 35-34.
Tom Riker, continuing his recent
surge, hit three consecutive
freethrows to turn the see-saw
game in the Gamecocks direction.
Riker scored 15 of his 17 points in
the final half to combine with John
Roche,who scored 24, to carry
away the victory. Riker also led
the rebounding department with 13.

The ACC champ will play the
winner of the Southern Conference
champ-St. Bonaventure game in
the semi-finals.
The Southern Conference
representative will probably be
Davidson. The Wildcats have a 10-0
record in the conference and will
play Iat-;I#acc VMI in the firet
round of the tournament which
begins Thursday in Charlotte.
The Wildcats closest com
petition should be East Carolina
which finished second in the
regular season. Davidson beat
East Carolina 91-76, during the
season as Doug Cook scored 26
points and got 11 rebounds.
The Ivy League leader is Penn
sylvania, but Columbia can still tie
them for the title. The Mid-Atlantic
Conference representative will be
either St. Josephs or Timple.
St. Bonaventure has won 21 and
lost one. Their one loss came at the
hands of Villanova. The Bonnies
are led by 6-11, 265 Bob Lanier who
has a 30.6 scoring average.
Lanier set a record in the
Holiday Festival Tournament in
New York in December when he
scored 50 points against Purdue
with their All-America Rick
Mount.
Through 22 games, Niagra has
won 18 and lost four. Two of their
losses were to St. Bonaventure and
Villanova. The other two losses
were to LaSalle and St. Peters. Top
scorer for Niagara is All-America
Calvin Murphy with a 30.5
average.
