State's Wolflets with Rick Holdt Biddie Coach Walsh and their husky front line tonight at 6:45 in Raleigh. The game will be carried on WUSC radio from Raleigh at 5.50. Chris Thomas and Sal Toscano will be the commentators. The Wolflets, with four of their starters standing 6-5 or more, take a 9-3 record into the contest, while the Biddies will try to protect their 11-2 mark. The Biddies who have run a man to-man defense effectively in the past several games will find it difficult to match the Wolflets. "I don't know what type of defense we will use," said Walsh, "we'll probably try a couple." To counter State's height, USC will start Traylor at center. Traylor who has averaged more than 20 rebounds per contest in his last four games will carry an 18.7 point average into the game. For their scoring punch, the Biddies will rely upon Joyce and his 25.5 scoring average. Casey Manning, with an 18.9 average, will be at the other forward slot. Both Joyce and Manning have also hit the boards well for the Frosh with 15.6 and 12.2 rebounds per game respectively. The USC guards will be Jimmy Powell, who is chipping in 15.2 points, and Jackie Brown with 7.3. This is only the second ACC team that the Biddies have faced this season. Roche is second in free throw race Gamecock All-American John Roche's sparkling per formance at the free throw line during the last three games has enabled the 6-3 junior to move into second place in the ACC Free throw percentage race behind Wake Forest's Charlie Davis. Roche connected on 41 of 44 attempts including 34 con secutive tries spanning the three games. He is seven behind the ACC record for consecutive foul shots set by Clemson's Jim Brennan. Roche also replaced Duke's Randy Denton as the con ference number four scorer. Roche's average increased from 21.9 to 22.6 over the three games. UNC's Charlie Scott continues to pace the league with a 27.0 mark. Davis is second with a 24.1 average and N.C. State's Vann Williford is third at 23.0. USC's Tom Owens is ninth with a 17.1 mark and Tom Riker is 16th with a 13.8 slate. Owens continues to have his own way in the rebounding battle as he outstrips second place Randy Denton by 2.9 stray shots a game. Owens' average is 15.1 compared to Denton's 12.2. Riker is 11th with a 8.7 mark. Rick Aydlett is fourth in field goal accuracy behind Duke's Larry Saunders, N.C. State's Paul Coder, and North Carolina's Dennis Wuycik. All but Sanders are sophomores. Off's< I n pre Carolina t< for regular By JIM HANEY Sports Editor South Carolina will attempt to clinch at least a tie for the regular season Atlantic Coast Conference Title tonight when the Gamecocks play the N. C. State Wolfpack in Raleigh. The game will begin at 9. The Wolfpack has lost two of its last three games and is 18-3 on the season. The University of North Carolina has victimized the 'Pack twice, and Georgia Tech upset Norman Sloan's crew, 89-77, in the last game of the North - South Doubleheader in Charlotte last weekend. Van Williford, a 6-6 senior from Fayetteville, N. C., is the Wolf pack's leading scorer with a 23 point per game average. He is followed by Paul Coder and Ed Leftwich, both of whom have 17.7 scoring averages. Coder is 6-9 and a sophomore. Leftwich is 6-5 and also a sophomore. Like all Norman Sloan-coached teams, the Wolfpack is aggressive and rugged. Last year State knocked Carolina out of a share of the ACC regular season title by beating them, 67-64, in the last game of the season in Raleigh. The State starting lineup will probably consist of Williford, Coder, Leftwich, Al Heartley and Rich Anheuser. Heartley, a junior who saw action in all but two State games last season, won the star ting assignment from Jim Risinger early in the season. RESERVE DAN WELLS Anheuser, a 6-6 senior and co captain along with Williford, carries a 10.1 scoring average into tonight's game. The Wolfpack's sixth man is 6-6, 205 Dan Wells, whose scoring average is higher than that of starting guard Heartley - 8.7 to 4.5. Defensively, Sloan likes to use the man-to-man defense. He hasn't used the man-to-man too frequently in recent years because he didn't have the material, but this season he says he thinks he does. Wells has played in all but one State game and is usually counted on to ignite a State ralley. Sloan uses Wells in much the same manner Gamecock Head Coach Frank McGuire uses Rich Aydlett. One of the stars of State's defense has been Coder, who held Georgia Tech's Rick Yukus to a 9 for 25 shooting performance in the North-South game. He added that he felt the pattern of officiating would be a deter mining factor in the game and that the front line that got into foul trouble would be in trouble. North Carolina was un defeated in 1967 when Frank McGuire guided them to a 32-0 season and a national cham pionship.
