Kaczka I to 50-50 By JEFF WALLACE Sports Writer South Carolina's track team came from behind in the last event to tie UNC, 50-50, in an indoor meet at Chapel Hill Saturday. UNC, leading the meet 50-45 with only the mile relay remaining, could not match Bob Kaczka's 49.0 anchor leg, and the Gamecocks won the event to score five points to tie. It was warm, Fraternity rush was over, and McBride Quadrangle was a casual conglomeration of white ties, three-piece suits and pretty coeds. Down the hill at Carolina Coliseum the crowd was relaxed and sociable. Davidson was a bad dream that never really happened. The Gamecocks, they figured, would maul Duke and the after game celebration would be great fun for all. But for 10 minutes and four seconds Duke just wouldn't cooperate. The Blue Devils momentarily held up the festivities while Dick DeVenzio directed the Duke attack to a 20-10 lead. McGuire called time out and tokd his Gamecocks they just couldn't disappoint all those nice people who came down the hill to have their spirits boosted. The Gamecocks didn't, 8265. John Roche served notice that things were going to be different right after the Gamecocks returned to the court. He hit a jump shot from the corner to cut Duke's lead to eight. During the next three minutes and 41 seconds, Rick Aydlett and Tom Riker chopped the Duke lead to one point, setting up a tap-in by John Ribock that put the Gamecocks ahead to stay, 23-22. . By the time the pep band had a chance to dash off a rendition of Hi Ho Silver the Gamecok lead was up to four and growning rapidly. The "UCLA Who?" sign in the stands suddenly became appropriate again. Roche survived a below average 4 for 13 field goal shooting per formance by hitting 15 straight from the foul line, and led all scorers with 23 points. The record for most consecutive free throws in one game is 21, set by UNC's York LArese in 1960. Tom Owens, who was dizzy before the game and almost didn't piay, scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Owens said he felt better after he got out on the court, but he was beginning to feel a little dizzy again after the game. Riker had 14 points, Ribock had 7 points ana 12 rebounds, Bob Carver scored 6, and Bob Cremins had 3. Duke's Randy Denton led the Blue Devils with 13 points, but the Blue Devil center spent 14 minutes in the game on the bench because of early foul trouble and a technical disqualification in the second half. -a7 Rick Aydett DAYS 18, 19, 20 )use Lobby ir Be WISE shipment ounstruction r 14 karat gold allow gold our constructions resentative early lead, win, 82-65 Riker eludes Denton *4 JiM Haney Sports Editor Blacksburg, Va. is 35 miles west of Roanoke, eight miles northwest of Christianburg, and the Norfork and Western Railroad stops right outside town, according to the map in Ayer's Directory. Blacksburg manufactures cheese, mines coal and produces engineers at Virginia PolytqKhC Mndityte. Blacksburg has also produced the worst thing that ever happened to a zone defense--Rick Aydlett. Rick Aydlett doesn't like zone defense. He shoots holes in them. The pattern is fairly consistent. Aydlett sits on the bench and watches the opening tap. He waits. The Gamecocks have a little difficulty shooting from the outside against a zone. Enter Rick Aydlett. He plays a little cautiously a first, frying to work h is way into the tempo of the game, he says. He stands in one Corner for a while, then crosses the lane to the other cor ner. The zone swings out to meet John Roche, who dribbles a round a bit and fires a pass to Aydlett, who is standing in his corner locking innocent and harmless. Aydlett Is finding himself with more company in his corner lately. Dfenses have discovered him, but they still aren't having much iuck stopping him. Aydlett scored a career high of 18 points against Duke Saturday, eight of them late in the second half as the Gamecocks were overcoming a 10-point Duke lead. Yes, defenses are finding out that Aydlett can shoot. The Gamecocks have known it all along. "We know he can shoot," says John Roche. "When Rick comes in we look for him to shoot." "When he starts improving his rebounding and defense, he's going to be a complete player," Roche continued. Aydlett got six rebounds Saturday, but several times had the bail barely escape his grasp. A ydlett says he worked on his shooting a lot last summer when he was a counselor at a camp in Pennsylvania. If he works on his shooting and defense as much this summer and gets the same results, the Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce is going to have something else to brag about besides cheese and coal and engineers. They may even extend the Norfork and Western to Blacksburg. New Spring Fashions at Grayson's Suits and Blazers by PBM Shirts by Sero and Enro. Ban-Lons by Puritan .
