The X but ca By JIM HANEY Sports Editor Davidson head coach Terry Holland will have two things to look forward to tonight when he brings his Wildcats into the Coliseum tonight for their game with Carolina. Defense leads league USC's Gamecocks are the only team in the ACC that hold first place in more than one team statistic this week. Carolina has led the league in defense all season and continues to hold that lead, giving up only 57.2 points per game while second place North Carolina State has a 69.3 defensive average. The Gamecocks moved into the lead in another category with a 20.2-point average margin of victory. N. C. State, the leader a week ago, fell to second place with an average win margin of 18.7 points. Although the Gamecocks have three big men in the forecourt, they are second in team reboun ding With 49.9 recoveries a game. N. C. State is first with an average of 51.9 per game. The individual leader in rebounding is Tom Owens. Owens has grabbed 15.6 missed shots a game. As a sophomore, Owens led the conference in rebounding with a 13.0 mark. The 6'10" junior from New York has captured over 20 rebounds five times this season. His high is 28 against Erskine. Charles Scott of UNC is the ACC's leading scorer, averaging 26.4 points a game - two ahead of Wake Forest's Charlie Davis. Davis heads the league in free throwing percentage at 87 per cent, while Larry Saunders of Duke is hitting 65.4 per cent from the floor to top the conference in that division. Waiting * Send your Valenti ORDEI Devine and Sal ildcats n they First, he will get to see his old high school coach. Holland played under assistant coach Bill Loving when Loving was coaching at Clinton High School in North Carolina. Second, he will get to see if his Wildcats can finally live up to his pre-season expectations. .The Davidson front three, Doug Cook, Jerry Kroll and Mike Maloy, were reputed by some to be the best front line in college basket ball. So far, they haven't been. But Kroll, Cook and Maloy are still not to be taken lightly. Maloy was an All-America last year and Doug Cook was voted the most valuable player in the Southern Conference Tournament last year. Davidson operates with a double post offense, with both Maloy and Cook stationed near the baseline and Kroll breaking across the middle. The purpose of the double post, says coach Loving, who has scouted the Wildcats, is to get Cook and Maloy into a one-on-one situation under the basket. "It takes two good inside men to work the double post," said Loving, "and they've got two good ones in Cook and Maloy. They're experienced and they play for the good percentage shot inside." Tom Owens, who, along with Tom Riker and John Ribock, will have to contend with Cook, Maloy and Kroll, says he can't remember having played against a double post offense this season. If the Gamecocks can keep Davidson from getting the ball inside to Maloy and his cohorts, the Wildcats will have to take the outside shot. But, as Owens pointed out, "They have some pretty good outside shooters." Guard Brian Adrian carries a 19.3 point scoring average into tonight's game and Kroll can be a deadly shooter from the corner. Maloy is the Wildcats' second leading scorer. He has a 17.9 point average, followed by Cook with a 16.3 average. The other Davidson starter will probably be Ron Stelzer.
