Mr. or Miss N.W.B.R. further says that apparently all the basketball players care about is national ranking and good grades, regardless of how they make them. Such a blanket indictment is interesting indeed. Apparently the writer saw one basketball player cheating or at least thinks he or she saw them, and therefore thinks the whole team cheats. It is rather doubtful that the writer has seen all the basketball players cheating at some time or'another so the indictment seems to be a little exaggerated. KINGS OF SPORT But more importantly, the writer illustrates an attitude that perhaps prevails among most of the student body that being the players, sitting up there on a pedestal built by sportswriters and fans alike, are to be treated as demigods, Kings of Sport. Perhaps much of the fault lies with the sportswriters, who sit at their little typewriters and glorify the heroes of sport, sometimes losing sight of the fact that the athletes are also human, with human flaws and human in discretions. This attitude that sports personalities are above the failings that plague the rest of the human race can cause a lot of irate disillusionment when the heroes are caught with their hands in the cookie jars. THEY'RE HUMAN, TOO Basketball players are as human as the rest of us; perhaps some of them have cheated at times, perhaps not. Nonetheless, one player cheating doesn't mean that the whole team does, nor does it mean that they should be looked upon agast amazement if they are caught at it. Cheating is clearly against University rules. There is no doubt about that. But an athletic figure in the classroom is like any other student. He ought to be treated like one. No preferential treatment when he's a good boy, but no major scandals when he's bad, either.
