USC < gunsi By BRUCE IIONICK Sports Editor A sunshiny afternnon and 42.971 screaming football fans provided the perfect backdrop Saturday for the Palmetto State's number one sports attraction. the Carolina Clemson game. The annual gridiron classic between the two intra-state arch rivals was expected to be the dogfight it traditionally had become. but the Warren Muir led Gamecocks scored two first quarter touchdowns and caused many to believe. not without reason, that Carolina would be on the long end of a rout. Clemson came back to close the gap. 17-13 before the half ended and it then looked as if it might have been anybody's ball game. "It bothered me plenty when they came back like that." said Carolina quaterback Tommy Suggs "I realized they couldn't tie Every Tuesday N STI SIZZLIN' STEAK Just present your student Our regular $1.69 sizzlin' baked potato, green salad POND! 1 548 KNOX A We Can Solve YOUR HANG-UPS * Shirts on hangers or in our special pack ages. * New life & color for suede and leather. * Skirts, suits, dresses, s weat er s beautifully cleaned. The Gamecocks were really cranked up for this one. "We went out there and carried the battle to them," he said, "then, doggone me, we relaxed out there and let them get back. And before we could turn around, it was 17 13.'' But neither white shoes nor the fat man from Barlow Bend could win it for the Tigers. Clemson appeared to be outhustled, out manned, outgunned and just plain out of it as the Gamecocks ran rampant over their upset hopes. Carolina, who had already clinched the ACC title and a trip to the Peach Bowl, was favored by about a touchdown in most polls. "We thought we could throw against Clemson," Dietzel said, "and we planned to open up our attack. We were going to let it all hang out because we felt Clemson was just too big for us to try to slug it out with them." Clemson head coach Frank Howard said, "They kept talking about what big boys we had, but, shoot. them Carolina boys looked pretty big to me. They got a good offensive line and good backs. They know how to play pretty well. "We just got beat," Howard continued. "They had a better team than we had, I thought.
