After practice last Monday
Coach Paul Dietzel announced to
his team that Pat Watson and Don
Buckner were elected co-captains
for the 1969 season.
The television cameras were
churning. Then the coach started
talking about bowl bids as the
Gamecocks listened patiently. He
closed his remarks by announcing
that Carolina will be the host team
in the Dec. 30 Peach Bowl in
Atlanta. Ga.

The reporters present beamed.
The television cameras whirled.

"We want LSU!" Coach Dietzel
had coached the LSU Bengals to
the national championship in 1958
and they wanted Dietzel to have a

The following Tuesday the word
was out: West Virginia would be
the opponent Dec. 30. The Moun

the nation and boasted an 8-1
record.
Amid all the excitement Dietzel
and his players were able to keep
their cool, stating flatly that the

The Peach Bowl announcement
was the biggest news of the week
but not the biggest game. Clemson
still has to be contended with
tomorrow.
Coach Paul Dietzel said, "Half
the season is over; the other half
will be played Saturday against
Clemson."
Newly elected captain for the
year Don Buckner calls the
Clemson match, "another Bowl
game."
Benny Padgett looks forward to
the game saying, "They are going

Dave Lucas, senior defensive

After watching Clemson game
films Tony Fusaro said, "They are
the most hard nosed team we've
played. They're big. They are a
real tough football team."
Mack Lee Tharpe said, "We are
going to forget the bowl. They will

the bowl bid. We are going to have
to concentrate on the Clemson

The Gamecocks in the midst of
its finest season in years, still have
the momentum coming off the

the other hand, has dropped its last

of an unpredictable defensive
