USC must grow to serve well To expand or not to expand is not the- question. The heart of the matter is adequacy. To properly serve the people of this state and others, USC must expand to offer the best and most diversified education possible. To fall short-to fall to offer the expanding number of courses needed in our expanding technological society or to fail to keep up to match the increase in the number of qualified college students - is to fall in the academic pursuit. We at the University cannot become involved so deeply in the personal pursuit of knowledge that we forget the future. To forget about new buildings - for business ad ministration, nursing or law-or to neglect the needs of the students-libraries, dormitories-or to neglect the faculty and staff would impair the functioning of the University as an institution of education. USC plans calls for progress in all these areas which will keep pace with increased enrollment and faculty positions. University officials have announced specific plans for the growth of the campus. We sincerely hope they will be able to meet the needs of the state with the help of the people to whom we look for the financing needed to support adequate education. Bonding authority must be given by the state before USC can reach its full potential. Sexpo fills need With Sexpo-USC the Carolina campus has moved foward in the solving one of the myriad problems of the modern campus. There are few educated people who will deny the American citizenry is hung-up on the sex issue and that most educational institutions have copped out by denying the existence of sex or denying that its students are aware of its existence. Carolina has joined the handful of progressive campuses who wish to do something about the problem.-which ranges from dormitory restrictions to pre-maritital sex and the use of contraceptives. During Sexpo many authoritative speakers were heard and many of what many adults would label as radical innovations were advocated. As many students marvelled at the common sense with which these experts approached sex and its ramifications, they thought of the often provincial and embarrassed manner in which their parents broached the subject to them. If one thing is to be learned from this symposium, it is that sex is not a matter to be whispered about in secret or scratched on the bathroom walls. It is a subject whose understanding is important to the psychological and sociological growth of the individual. Sex is not to be forgotten or hushed up. It must be examined closely by the entire University in a factual and learned manner, and we have taken the first steps here at USC, but only the first. 91 GA kocGI Founded Jan 30. 1906 with Robert Elliott Gonzales as the first editor. Among this group were two black students. This carefree atmosphere was broken by a voice over the loudspeaker, interrupting the music: "Company policy, we hate niggers." Stunned by this remark, the people at Don's showed mixed reactions. The voice apparently referred to a black male student dancing with a white female. A white friend of the black student involved approached the owner and asked who was responsible for the announcement. The owner replied, "I hate niggers and he is a nigger." Some people at Don's that night regarded this statement as a blatant racial insult. We. the un dersigned, are writing this letter in support of an American citizen's right to choose his own company. We were promised a photographer either Monday or Tuesday night. No one showed up either night. We were disappointed mainly because a few weeks ago the Garnet and Black was com plaining that no one was asking them to take pictures. 'Trying i.s unne( (The following article was submitted by Dr. Hatvey L. Burnette Jr., director of the Student Health Center. Ed's note.) Hats off to the Visiting Scholars Program; Carolina Students were offered the opportunity last week to hear a most outstanding and highly qualified expert on sexology who lectured with oratorical perfection and superb knowledge of his subject, "Sexual Maturity." Ed Chen's column in the Nov. 14 Gamecock which attacked Prof. Hettlinger's words as "absurd" and refered to him as a "so called sex expert," besides exhibiting poor taste and disrespect for this scholar of high calibre and in ternational renown, illustrated to us the extent to which some in dividuals will attempt to rationalize their sexual im maturity, sexual misconceptions and or unrestrained sexual desires and activities. Dr. Hettlinger's lecture on Tuesday evening in the Campus Room, which was well attended, and his other discussions were, I'm sure, most meaningful to the clear thinking students of Carolina who attended these in quest of knowledge and understanding. It is indeed unfortunate that Mr. Chen fosters the notion that "less and less of today's young people seem to care much about lasting relationships" and advocates "trying out" sexually and <cohabitantly as a substitute . for lasting relationships. This he thinly disguised in his column; however, it is evidently the idea he is fostering. To put it bluntly, from an anatomical standpoint this "trying out" process is unnecessary and of no practical use when one recognizes there is not this much variation in the genital anatomy. "Trying out" and cohabitation are poor substitutes or comparisons for normal marital relationships E . ng in Join the d iversifie4 of Martin and help create technology in: I Systems, Launc Space Explorati Advanced Elect Communication We're looking for qualified Electronic, Mechanical and them deep and rewarding ir long-term Research, Develop uation, and Production proj above. I doubt that Mr. Chen has reviewed the statistics indicating the high divorce rate for persons who practiced permarital sexual relations, and his argument that divorce would be diminished if premarital sex and cohabitation were commonly acceptable and practiced certainly appeart grossly inaccurate During the past ten years specialization in student health. It has been my lot to diagnose pregnancy in large numbers of "illegitmate" coed mothers and to become involved in breaking the "happy" news to the "trapped" fathers.......their mod concepts of free love, carefree romance, sexual revolution, trying out, t experimentation, cohabitation, etc. fizzle away into a very dark cloud of numerous complications and disturbing unpleasantries; not to overlook the many modern thinkers) who end up trans mitting venereal disease and the misinformed girls who submit to criminal abortion and suffer un fortunate complications which sometimes last a lifetime. Does Mr. Chen plan to encourage his daughters and sons to practice "trying out" and cohabitation? Did his parents select each other in this manner? Will he choose his wife through this elimination process? Has our cilivation fallen to this low level? Do intelligent and decent human beings have to succumb to the tents of "this increasingly per missive society?"
