He i presently serving four months active duty at Fort Jacheon for the National Guard. I am one who has suffered tht dubious pleasure of witnessing Tniversity of Maryland football for the past four years. In reality, it was more like at tending a mass execution. Despite a change of coach in three of the four years, the seasons came up remarkably similar. There was one flop after another. Still, there was cause to hope. Each nev- coach promised new era. new Ckcitement. bright lights. etc. The student body loved it. Finally, though, the ticket-holders began to see past the propaganda --tBb lekn McGuire Palmetto Clinic The fourth annual Palmetto Prep Basketball Clinic will be held this weekend at the Carolina Coliseum and will feature coaches Dick Campbell, The Citadel; Ben Jobe, South Carolina State; Clair F. Bee, a member of both the Football and Basketball Hall of Fame; and the University's Frank McGuire. The clinic will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. with a welcome speech given by McGuire. Sunday's ac tivities will commence at 9 a.m. and terminate at 3:45 in the af ternoon, after a speech by Bee. Since wins were so rare (two in the last two years) the masses were content to play up close losses with We're-number-one-enthisiasm. And, good-God when Maryland did win, the crowds had to be restrained from tearing down the stadium. The last four years might be classified in a more fitting ap praisal as the Odd Years. Certainly they were that. The first coach of that era was Tom Nugent, who blamed losing on everyone but Tom Nugent. He blamed it on the defense. so he shifted a defensive back to quarterback. He blamed it on offense. so he shifted offensive personnel to defense. The logic of these moves f-iiled to materialize in a decent record. Hence, Nugent was dismissed. The next coach to add his mark on the odd years was Lou Saban. who was plucked from the Buffalo. Bills of all places. The team again failed to come up with a winning record and Saban migrated to the Denver Broncos for more money than the University ever dreamed of paying him. Nevertheless, real catastrophe was just around the corner; the University athletic department hired Bob Ward as its head coach. Ward's first year was something to remember. Maryland, since it was losing in about every way conceivable, failed to win. Of all things, Ward opened with a left handed quarterback who was described by a fellow player as one who couldn't "pass , run or handle the ball." Despite this negative triple threat, there were others who made it a team that a mother might not even love. Last year, though, Ward would begin to lead Maryland out of the doldrums, or so he said. Losing frustrated him. It made him antagonistic to his players and the press. Finally, he became the losing coach with no one in his corner.Many of his players ex pressed discontent with his coaching methods. They wanted him fired. The team presented its case before Athletic Director James Kehoe, who was "stunned" by the affair Nontheless. he gave both sides a chance to present their grievances, and Ward resigned. Standing tall with a 4-1 record, Carolina trails their opponents in all the important statistical depart ments. The ACC leaders have been outscored 99-95 and as Coach Dietzel put it, "'we have held our opponents to 67 first downs while we made 33."' Coach Dietzel can joke about the facts , and even comment that statistics are for losers. That kind of talk is easy when you are the win ningest coach at South Carolina in 13 years and the man much bowl game talk centers around. "We havn't exactly splattered anyone but last week wasn't a tough time at all, "' Dietzel said. "If they would have made that field goal though, we would not have gone for the tie.
