Independence at Florence set for 1970 By JIM WANNAMAKER Managing Editor Carolina's first regional campus - and its biggest - is almost readv to go on its own. The Florence regional campus becomes independent this sum mer Former Winthrop College Vice President Walter Douglas has been named president of Francis Marion State College. Douglas is now head of Salisbury State College in Salisbury. Md. Until he moves to Florence next spring, an administrative assistant at the campus will continue preparations for the expansion. S.C. Governor Robert E. Mc Nair, in announcing the ap pointment said that he hopes the four-year college in Florence will be the first in a system of four-year state colleges. The second, he said, may be a state operated College of Charleston, which has been offered to the state. Francis Marion State has asked for $1.5 million in state funds before the State Budget and Control Board. "This is not a 'guesstimate' of what it will cost to run the school," said James A. Morris, State . Commissioner of Higher Education. "Tt is made on the basis of what they are doing now and what the start-up cost will be." Morris said that the University is now spending $500,000 a year on the Florence Regional Campus. William C. Casper of the University's regional campus staff said that in losing the regional campus the University would lose its oldest, largest and one of the strongest of the regional cam puses. He said that it would sub stantially reduce enrollment in the regional campus system. Laser beam study nears completion By ELLIOT BORENSTEIN If some night you're walking between the Russell House and the Engineering Building, and you see a red pencil light beam overhead, you're witnessing an advanced experiment being conducted at USC. Norman Haskell, a senior who has worked for Southern Bell for six years is using the helium neon continuous wave laser for sending multi-channel TV signals through the air. Haskell started from scratch, designing and building most of the equipment himself. Expensive equipment has been donated by larger industrial companies who are interestdd in furthering research in this fiels. The U.S. Navy as well as private companies, such as Texas In struments, have already contacted Haskell about the use of his theories of multiplex modulation. Completion date is expected to be in January. Civil service recruiting college grads A U.S. Civil Service Commission representive will be on campus Wednesday to give federal job information to interested students. The representative will be in the Russell House at 9:00 a.m. for students seeking information and applications. - The government recruits college graduates for two basic categories administrative positions and professions such as physics. chemistry, mathematics, engineering, the physical sciences and accounting. College graduates in the sciences, mathematics, engineering and other specialities are not required to take a written test. Instead they are evaluated according to education and ex perience.
