Hollomar Dietzel said 'ThE the By RODNEY SPROATT Sports Writer South Carolina's third quarter offensive suddenness might have caused N.C. State's early and unexpected conference demise. The Wolfpack, picked by many football scholars to top the ACC this year, fell to their second conference defeat,, which might have doomed therfh in their race for first. The reason for State's probable death can be traced to a 72-yard punt return by Jim Mitchell, which led to Carolina's two touchdown blitz early in the third quarter and a come-from-behind 21-17 win. With Mitchell's touchdown and DuPre's conversion USC led 14-10 with 1:35 left in the third quarter. Coach Paul Dietzel stated, A GAME CC SI Harve * hair styling * razor cut * shoe shine GA MEC SH ERs breaks for six ag y deset victory "Mitchell's run was the turning point of the game. I knew we could score if we ever got our hands on the ball, as we did, but Mitchell's run really built up our mon tentum." In the fourth quarter the Cocks went 71 yards in 10 plays to score their last touchdown. "That was the biggest touchdown of the year." Coach Dietzel happily stated, "That iced it for us." N.C. State wasn't the same team after that, but managed one more touchdown on a couple of Carolina defensive errors. "I'm proud of our kids, they are a fine group to handle, a group which pays the price and doesn't complain-they really deserved the victory," Dietzel said. Fred Zeigler caught four passes for 46 yards and set an ACC record for passes caught with 109. "I haven't had a chance to see the films yet," said Deitzel after the game, "but Rudy Holloman played an outstanding game for us and as usual, Warren played a fine game." "That was the noisiest crowd I ever heard," Dietzel said. "It was the best spirit I've ever heard since I've been at Carolina. 'thought I was back in the "Snake Pitt' (at LSU). You could really feel the spirit of the crowd. It was the first time I actually heard the fight song and it really fired our boys up. You don't know how much it means when the team knows the student body is behind them." . -Chief photographer Chuck Keefer wmn ER SHOP Inn mnell ri. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. nt only 9 a.m.-1 p.m. R SHOP R INN MonC beat 1 By DON HULT Fotball Analyst Most fans would expect Coach Paul Dietzel to feel the running, passing or defense to be the most vital phase of the football game. He doesn't. Coach Dietzel thinks the kicking game is supreme- the punts, punt returns, kicks and kick-off returns. The runbacks of Dick Harris and Jim Mitchell provided the key in the Gamecocks' victory over State, but the kicking game set the tempo during the first half when Carolina appeared to be sluggish. The Cocks won the toss, which was a healthy.omen against a ball control team like State, but the kickoff return was brought out only to the USC 17 and the offense was unable to run inside against the State defense. . Billy Parker had to punt from deep in his own territory and consequently the Wolfpack of fensive machine started their first series with excellent field position on their own 45. State then drove on the ground near enough to kick a field goal. The same pattern ensued on the next two series with the Gamecocks taking over deep in their own territory because of short returns and strong State punting. When the Carolina defense stiffened a bit, State tried to use another phase of the kicking to try and put USC even closer to its own goal. Coach Edwards took out a page from the style of football of the 1930's when he had his team quick-kicked on third down. They came out in a regular offensive formation, then kicked the ball over the heads of the unsuspecting Carolina defensive backs. The kicker tried to kick the ball in an 9 EAST HA WmS P1 lay prc tough end-over-end fashion so it would roll to near the USC goal. The ball, however, failed to roll. Taking the ball on their 40, Carolina moved the ball fairly well but various breakdowns kept them from scoring. The kicking game backfired and the usually accurate Billy Dupre, who had come through under pressure against Georgia, missed two field goal tries from the 36 and 29-yard lines. When the passing game breaks down the quarterback is usually blamed. Likewise a missed place kick is usually blamed on the kicker. But in both instances the man holding the ball has to depend on his teammates. On a placekick the blockers have to seal off the middle against rushers who will try to block the ball via the shortest distance from the defensive side of scrimmage. In Carolina's 24-23 - victory over Virginia in 1967, Jimmy Poole's winning field goal, which barely made it over the cross-bar, was kicked with the football's laces facing the kicker. On DuPres's first try the snap from center was a bit high. Hence, the kicker's time was disrupted. His second attempt was too low as his foot seemed to make contact too close to the ball's center. Despite the misses, DuPre still is an excellent offensive weapon because of his kicking accuracy, strength and because of the speed in which he gets his ball air-borne. Most kickers take between 1.7 and 1.8 after the snap, but the former A.C. Flora booter takes but 1.5 seconds, an edge which can make the difference between a blocked attempt or an extra point. State drove for its score with att & Whitney RTFORD AND MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT Ictice, Wolfj surgeon-like precision, using sweeps, scissor plays run by an in motion wingback and power plays which utilized the heft of an of fensive line that ran over an un dermanned Cocks' defense. It was then that the coach's affirmative belief in 'the kicking game paid its dividend. Harris scooted down the center of the field on a "middle return." He had only two more tacklers to beat for a score, but his run set the Cocks' offense up with exce1lnt field position. His run plus the band's playing of Dixie seemed to set Carolina's stadium and football team ablaze with enthusiasm. The offense rolled down the field on the strength of flat passes to Rudy Holloman. Billy Ray Rice wedged in for the first score despite N.C. State's muscular goal line stand. Jumper hurt Learning where to land has always been an important part of a parachute jump. Glen Cook can now testify to that. While jumping with the USC Parachute Club in Barnwell, S.C., he landed on the chimney of the terminal building resulting in two compressed vertabre and a crushed disk. Like climbing on a horse after a bad fall, Glen said he is only sorry "that it would be a while before he could jump again." He will be resting in University Hospital in Augusta for the next ten days until his injuries and undaunted spirit heal. *CE VIsi' UN LIE At Pratt & Whitney Aircraft "ceiling a is not lust an expression. In the mind of one man on the USC bench, the din in the Cockpit was reminiscent of triumphs in LSU Tiger Stadium a decade ago. The momentum of the game plus an advantage in physical con ditioning, led to Carolina's third score and a profoundly important victory. Still, the kick returns provided the impetus for the second half comeback. And since Monday is the day the Cocks spend the bulk of their time on punt and kick-off returns, it may prove to be the day that brought Carolina a conference championship. Biddies fall The Carolina Biddies saw a 7-0 halftime lead slip away on a long punt return and fell to the Clemson Cubs Friday 21-13. It was the first loss for the Biddies this season and snapped their 11 game winning streak. Carolina scored in the second quarter on a 64-yard pass from Jackie Young to Billy Carpenter. The second Biddie touchdown came in the final period when Young scrambled over from the two.
