Thursday's h e a r i n g, or to the
County Court.
According to Bursey's defense
attorney, Jasper Cureton, the stat
ute against burning a flag carries
a fine of $100, plus 30 days' im
prisonment. Therefore, it may be
outside the jurisdiction of the Gen
kral Sessions Court, in which case
it will go to the County Court, he
said.
Steve Wilson, a physical educa
tion major at USC, testified he
saw Bursey waving a hurning flag.
According to Cureton, W i i s o n
saidl he left an AWARE meeting
early and came back by Russell
House as the meeting broke up.
He saw several students, Bursey
among them, carrying a confed
erate flag, and followed them t,)!
President Jones' home. It was (lark,
and Wilson testified that he could
not see who set the flag afire, but
that he did see Bursey waving a
burning flag.
Cureton said that along with the
statute which makes it a crime to
l.estroy a flag, there is also one
against mutilating a flag. He ex
plained that waving the flag while
it was burning may be considered
Imutilating it.

the NROTC staff told him that he
land Col. Richard S. Johnson had
talked with several students with
some admissions of amphetamine

"Only one of the students has
talked to me," Cooper said. "He
said he was not in any way ha

Cooper explained that amphet
amine use would place the mid
shipman cadet's security clearance
in doubt. ie said that while occa

probably wouldn't he iarmful, it
would be another matter while on
submarine duty.
Johnson, NROTC commander on

ments, the writer claimed.
A student, in part responsible
for the letter, told The Gamecock
that the matter "has been cor
rected and dropped."
Cooper said, "I don't know of
any federal agent on campus, but
Frank J. Scuderi of the Bureau of
Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs
said that the NIO was investigat
ing on campus.
Scuderi said that his agency in
vestigates only "big suppliers"
because of problems with man
power, search warrants and case
loads-but can "not reveal any in
formation if we get it."
"I'm not saying we do or we
don't," he added.
Dr. Robert Beamer of the School
of Pharmacy said "amphetamines
are commonly called 'pep pills.'
They are stimulants. They are
not addicting in the physiological
sense, like morphine.
"They can he psychologically
habit-forming. Under the super
\ision of a physician they are
helpful. but the.- are sometimes
taken by people .ik" truck (drivers
and students to stay awake."'
